Who does a child surrounded by war become? They become part of the war machine. The story focuses mostly on Ishmael's life before and after his time as a boy soldier. I am both curious and afraid to know the events of his life in more detail.

I generally find the "A Very Short Introduction" series to actually be quite good, with most of the volumes accomplishing exactly what they intend to by giving a good overall sense of a field of inquiry and its methods, or of the important elements of a given topic. Unfortunately, this volume did none of this very well. Many of the examples used to introduce to the reader to mathematical thinking are explained more clearly (and in a more engaging fashion) in Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh. In general, the latter is probably a better overall introduction to the world of mathematics (both the subject as well as the academic practice) than this Very Short Introduction managed to be.

I read this again, remembering that I thought the first time I read it that it was an amazing story. But after eight years (I love gift inscriptions that include the year), I wasn't sure it would hold up. I was glad to find that it not only held up, but I think it increased in my estimation. I can't really find words to do it justice. It's the story of a boy and his growing up. How inadequate! Don't all wonderful, amazing, gorgeous books have the same theme at heart? If, as I think, a book needs to tell the story of life and how it changes us, and needs to tell it so beautifully that we are drawn into it and find ourselves nodding in agreement and shaking our heads in fear, well, then, this book is at number one on my "Best Books of This Century List".

** spoiler alert ** Upon turning twelve, each twelve years old child in the Community will receive an assignment. Unlike the other children who received Engineer or Laborer, Jonas was chosen to be the Receiver. The Receiver is the highest honor in the Community. As the Receiver, Jonas will carry all the memories of the past. Jonas begins to learn about things that no longer exist in his Community like color and love. The overall message of this book is that nothing is set in stone and you can always make changes if you focus and try. Even if something has been there for a long time does not mean you can't change it. Just like at Baruch, you can always voice your opinion and make a change. You can always start a new club that wasn't there before. I really enjoyed this book mainly because of how strong the message is. My generation can connect to this because the future of the world is in our hands. We are the future workers, doctors, politician and leaders. We can make a change just like Jonas could change the way his Community lives.

Meh. Didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Cryptonomicon and the philosophical stuff was kinda heavy-handed and not very interesting.

*this isn't really a review, just a little comment* I really wish I liked this book more. It was written well, had strong characters and good mythology, but it's just not the right book for me. Fans of fantasy would probably love this and if the synopsis interests you, I recommend checking it out.

I'm a bit torn about my review for this. Steiner's story is compelling. So compelling, in fact, that I read the book in about one sitting (way past my bedtime too!). I really wanted to see how she would escape the relationship and was also generally curious about her life's path. Yet, I didn't love the book or Steiner's writing, I only liked it.

This is a fine first contact/ alien invasion novel, written by people who know their stuff. It's well thought out, entertaining hard SF. It is so good in fact, that it should be used as a basis of comparison for any modern alien invasion movie. All that is stupid in "Independence Day", for instance, is highlighted by this book.
