After picking up the latest hardcover by Greg Iles just to have something to read, I kept wondering where this guy had been all my life? I'm now going through his books one after the other. So far, all are real page-turners with unpredictable and exciting plots. A nice change of pace if you've ever read any of the crap by James Patterson.

Who wants to go road-tripping with me? Got the paperback and reread. Still liked it as much as the first time.

I was given this as a well-intentioned gift, but it was one of the more insulting books I have ever read, filled with obvious advice. It is also one of the few books that I have ever had the willpower to get rid of. Nevertheless, it is fairly highly regarded, so many people must find it useful.

In mijn persoonlijke top vijf van boeken. Vanaf bladzijde 1, zin 1 weet je dat Santiago Nasar vermoord zal worden en toch blijf je een heel boek lang in spanning. De meester-verteller García Marquez ten top.

I could have SWORN I wrote I review of this before! Anyway, this book is like the anti-Twilight and here's why: it falls squarely within the same generic sphere of YA paranormal romance but inverses so many of the aspects that make me worry for "the youth of today." 1) Rather than love at first sight the main pairing in this story actually get to know one another first. And the romance is healthy. (Boy is still dreamy though, oh yes.) 2) The girl is the one with supernatural powers! 3) The family stuff is complex. Um, I could probably list more but anyway, with regard to this book's merits (not necessarily in direct contrast to others), I can also say that it's well-written, if not flashily so. And the story finds a nice balance between the paranormal and the quotidian high school stuff - in fact, in a lot of ways the fantastic elements work metaphorically to express the challenges of being young and/or human. Which is really the ideal goal of (speculative) fiction.

This book is a deeply moving (true) story of a journalist's experience living and reporting in Zimbabwe for twenty years. I cried more than once reading it, but despite the innately depressing topic, it has a constant theme (like the title suggests) of hope. I would recommend this to anyone, but especially to those who have any interest in African politics and or human rights.

There is only one reason this book got three stars and it is this. It takes 150 pages to get into the book. That being said, it is also a very interesting and engaging book after those first 150 pages. Though the beginning of Mr. Norrell and the church statues is an interesting tale, sure to spark the imagination of good lovers of fantas, the book quickly falls into political landscape of do's and dont's with little magic being done and annoying characters showing up until V---- shows up and then all hell breaks loose, in the best of terms I assure you. The changing of characters, the great depth of research and explination as if this were not a fiction book at all, gives it a fun edge that causes one to wonder at the Raven King and what magic really means in real time. Also a good book for killing bugs with. I strongly suggest people try to get through the rather dull parts, because the other parts definetly make up for it. After slugging through the hard parts, you actually get rewards, unlike a good many books out there these days.

This was the first Jodi book I read and it has always stayed with me...I think the year I read it, I was so interested in the topic I would use it any chance I got. I even think I wrote my final Bioethics paper on the topic. It is the type of book that you need to talk with someone as soon as you are done.

I liked the setting and learning about monastic life in Italy. The subtitle makes it almost sound like a Shakespearian comedy, but it has a much more sombre tone. A cool little murder mystery, even though I totally didn't buy the revealed monastery murderer. Now I want to go back in time and see this version of Italy...maybe not as a woman, but yeah, you know!
