one of my top 5 favorites of all time. Favorite Quotes Have you ever watched the jet cars race on the boulevard?...I sometimes think drivers don’t know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly...If you showed a driver a green blur, Oh yes! He'd say, that’s grass! A pink blur! That’s a rose garden! White blurs are houses. Brown blurs are cows. There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing. ...The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies. And when he died, I suddenly realized I wasn’t crying for him at all, but for the things he did. I cried because he would never do them again, he would never carve another piece of wood or help us raise doves and pigeons in the backyard or play the violin the way he did, or tell us jokes the way he did. He was part of us and when he died, all the actions stopped dead and there was no one to do them the way he did. He was individual. He was an important man. I’ve never gotten over his death. Often I think what wonderful carvings never came to birth because he died. How many jokes are missing from the world, and how many homing pigeons untouched by his hands? He shaped the world. He did things to the world. The world was bankrupted of ten million fine actions the night he passed on. ...Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there. It doesn’t matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away. The difference between the man who cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching, he said. The lawn cutter might as well just not have been there at all; the gardener will be there a lifetime. We’ll go on the river...or we’ll go that way. Or we’ll walk the highways now. And we’ll have time to put things into ourselves. And someday, after it sets into us a long time, it’ll come out her hands and our mouths. And a lot of it will be wrong, but just enough of it will be right. We’ll just start walking around today and see the world and the way the world really looks. I want to see everything now. And while none of it will be me when it goes in, after awhile it’ll gather together inside and it’ll be me. Look at the world out there. My God, look at it out there, outside me, out there beyond my face, and the only way to really touch it is to put it where it’s finally me, where it’s in the blood, where it pumps around a thousand times ten thousand a day. I get a hold of it so it will never run off. I’ll hold on to the world tight someday. I’ve got one finger on it now. That’s a beginning.

I had high hopes for this book, it coming recommended from multiple friends and a consistent NYT bestseller. The book started off a little slow for me, but by the second character's story, I was hooked. I loved watching their lives untangle, develop and unfold in a catastrophic, elegant way. They seemed real -- they were identifiable. I connected with them. I was disappointed, however, by the ending. I feel like Rachman couldn't find a way to conclude all of their stories together and instead capped the story with a quick, italicized summary. Definitely would recommend for anyone who's worked for a paper, spends time reading the news or has any journalism background.

i would give this book a three but my mom would give it a five, so i'll compromise. i had a hard time with the punctuation (no quotation marks, just hyphens). as i had a hard time with the speech. but once i got past that, it was okay. i do enjoy reading historical fiction and south africa certainly has an interesting history.

An absorbing account of the lives of fictional and historical characters blended in an accurate portrayal of Elizabethan England. This book is a tragedy, but an enlightening one. This novel is also available unabridged and illustrated from Lepanto Press.

I hadn't really read any Gaiman since the Sandman graphic novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but then I've always been a fan of old African myths and stories. I think some of his intent got a little muddled nearing the 3/4 mark, but it's not so troublesome that it hindered my enjoyment as a whole.

I had to stop reading this book for fear of jeopordizing my health. So many things I never thought to try, so many things I had forgotten about, such descriptions that I suddenly had to give things I was pretty sure I hated a second chance (okay I've never met a candy I hated, fine). Every chapter included at least 2 trips to the deli. It had to stop.

This book had some great points, but his writing style is repetitive band his train of thought is, at times, a little confusing. I work at a bookstore and this book is flying off the shelves so I may have had higher expectations that I should have, but this was a little disappointing.

A very different view of Venice compared to Donna Leon's atmospheric descriptions. Zen returns to Venice where he grew up and finds it full of memories and old people, as well as the usual corruption.

This may sound horrible, but I absolutely hate following Sam and Frodo after they split off from the group and head towards Mordor to destroy the Ring. I find that part of the story slow-moving and boring, and I generally skip over that part of the story. I enjoy reading about Aragorn and the rest of the party. This part of the tale is quick-paced and filled with adventure and excitement.
