Plainsong is kind of a big deal here in Denver. I remember it was chosen as the book for One Book, One Denver a few years ago. I didn't read it then. I bought this book awhile ago, but never got around to reading it until it was recently chosen for my book club. The book is set in Holt, a fictional small town on Colorado's Eastern Plains. It follows several characters--Tom Guthrie and his two sons, Ike and Bobby; Victoria Roubideaux, a pregnant high-school girl; and Harold and Raymond McPherson, a pair of bachelor brothers. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I liked Haruf's writing style, and it was very easy to get involved in the story. I grew up in a small town in Colorado myself. My hometown is not on the Eastern Plains, but as I read this book I felt like I knew these people. I especially loved the McPherson brothers... sort of reminded me of my grandpa, who was also a cattleman. I found myself involved with all of the characters, though. There weren't any that I didn't want to learn more about. So, you might be wondering why I gave this book only three stars. Well, two things... there were certain parts of this book that I felt were extremely graphic and/or unnecessary to the story. And I didn't really care that much for the way the book ended. I don't know why, or what I was expecting, but for some reason I found it unsatisfying. I am interested in reading Eventide though.
