Matt Parris _att_arris — Plainsong is kind of a big deal here in Denver. I remember it was chosen as the book for One Book, One Denver a few years ago. I didn't read it then. I bought this book awhile ago, but never got around to reading it until it was recently chosen for my book club. The book is set in Holt, a fictional small town on Colorado's Eastern Plains. It follows several characters--Tom Guthrie and his two sons, Ike and Bobby; Victoria Roubideaux, a pregnant high-school girl; and Harold and Raymond McPherson, a pair of bachelor brothers. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I liked Haruf's writing style, and it was very easy to get involved in the story. I grew up in a small town in Colorado myself. My hometown is not on the Eastern Plains, but as I read this book I felt like I knew these people. I especially loved the McPherson brothers... sort of reminded me of my grandpa, who was also a cattleman. I found myself involved with all of the characters, though. There weren't any that I didn't want to learn more about. So, you might be wondering why I gave this book only three stars. Well, two things... there were certain parts of this book that I felt were extremely graphic and/or unnecessary to the story. And I didn't really care that much for the way the book ended. I don't know why, or what I was expecting, but for some reason I found it unsatisfying. I am interested in reading Eventide though.

Chuanning Huang kawada9995b465 — This one was a hard one to rate for me. I've read so many of these sort of books by now that they all merge into one big category and all get a 4-star rating. Saving Zoe didn't do a great deal for me - it didn't rouse any emotions in me or make me think. It has a vague theme about meeting people off the internet, but that's nothing you don't get taught at school, along with all the 'fireworks are dangerous' and 'smoking causes lung cancer'. Maybe I'm just feeling slightly bitter, but this one is only getting 3 stars from me. It just isn't at the same standard as its other high-school novel companions.
