Because you know the fate of the sisters in the story from the beginning it is sorta depressing in a way and you don't have the "I wonder what's going to happen?" expectation. It more of "how is it going to happen?" The style of the writing is a bit confusing. The author jumps around with point of views and time periods, but a quarter of the way through the book you start to get it. The book really provokes questions of self sacrifice, family, duty, and politics. It was a good book for book club inciting good discussion.

This book is brilliant, strange, and beyond any attempt to coherently summarize or critique it. I find it reminiscent of The Man Who Was Thursday. If you like that kind of surrealism, you will no doubt like The Third Policeman.

Kundera rules!

Jackson has woven a tale so thick with twists and turns it makes my 5 year old daughter's hair look smooth. Ro Grandee is stuck in an abusive marriage to man she is desperately in love with. How can a woman love a man who hits her? This novel does a nice job of letting us begin to understand. Jackson has done her homework. Ro Grandee suffers much the same way that other abused women suffer. She has limited access to money, her husband has closed off her circle of friends. She only has one secret friend, her next door neighbour. She plays that relationship down, so as to not alert her husband Thom. She walks on eggshells in his presence, but can't help letting herself slip, every once in a while, into her old self Rose Mae Lolly. I rooted for Rose Mae, she had fight in her. Thom is also a very jealous husband. His favourite question is, "who is he?" We get to see Rose Mae Lolly emerge from Ro Grandee and shed her like a second skin. This is a story of understanding how your past affects your present and future, making peace with yourself and understanding forgiveness. A stirring read that will make you think.

As always - my Stephen King caveat: I do not like horror as a genre. It scares me silly and usually grosses me out. But Stephen King is a genius of writing, character development and phrases that make me yell "HA!", so I read all his stuff. There. This is good. Not his best, nor his worst. The first story was pretty classic King, and as such I predicted the ending, which bummed me out. The last story was the best - and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since! Shivery and imaginative and disturbingly possible.

One of my absolute favorite books.

I'm in two minds about this book. It did give me some interesting information to flesh out my rather shaky image of Princess Beatrice and made me understand why she edited her mother's journals - something that had previously made me vilify her somewhat - and completed my increased research into Queen Victoria's children. However, I got the impression that Dennison didn't really like his subject. While he told us of Beatrice being a wonderfully talented pianist and translator, he always very quickly races back to the point that she couldn't express her full talent because of her mother. I'm pretty certain that he has a vendetta against Queen Victoria as well from the way that she is portrayed as all but Evil with a capital E. However, there were other sides to her character, which were admittedly diminished where bringing up and corresponding with her children were concerned, that are sadly neglected here. This book does prompt me to inadvertently add a slightly patronising 'poor' to Beatrice's name, like many a Wales sister, but Beatrice was certainly never always like that. Take her behaviour as a child for instance, and her stubbornness to marry. After reading more about her, I've gained a more unbiased view of Beatrice's life, but this book was certainly a good start.

Good to read - learned a lot - but history is just slow reading for me. It did revolutionalize my ideas on why history is what it is and why certain groups of people conquered others.

This is the best thing I've ever dug out of my attic. Retro smut is the way to go.

Perhaps the books are becoming more of the same, but this was a bit of a letdown relative to the earlier books. It wasn't bad, but it seemed to be missing some spark or something that would allow it to stand out from the others that had come before.
