heheyuan
禾 鸳 heheyuan — I know, this book is at an 8th grade level and you could knock it out in an afternoon. I liked it though. Even though the kid named Ponyboy gave me some pretty horrible (perverted) mental imagery when I was a teenager.

yoohaena
Haena Yoo yoohaena — Entertaining in parts, by the end I could not get over how self-obsessed this woman is. How come not one of the wise people she encounters on her journey had the guts to tell her that the best way to find yourself is often through real realtionships with others? I imagine it would be difficult to forge a friendship with someone so inwardly motivated.

shefska
Zach Shefska shefska — At first I wasn't that impressed for some reason: I think I was concerned that the author was going to center his book around the idea of "Look, Western World, this is what it's like to live in a war-frought, Third World country." But of course I was very wrong, and this book goes much deeper than that: the main character's character is flushed out in a guilt-ridden contemplation of his own strength of character in a world where social hierarchies can ruin anyone.

_uke_ewhurst
Luke Dewhurst _uke_ewhurst — Because you know the fate of the sisters in the story from the beginning it is sorta depressing in a way and you don't have the "I wonder what's going to happen?" expectation. It more of "how is it going to happen?" The style of the writing is a bit confusing. The author jumps around with point of views and time periods, but a quarter of the way through the book you start to get it. The book really provokes questions of self sacrifice, family, duty, and politics. It was a good book for book club inciting good discussion.

thaisparentoni
Thaís Parentoni thaisparentoni — This is a children's story, which means it is light and fun. However what sets this book apart is that it still manages to be very intelligent, playing games with words and numbers and ideas. So while it is extremely easy to read, the ideas and scenes play on in your mind. Delightful!

yeliyong
Leo Yip yeliyong — 1984 Batchelder Award Winner This is a wonderful story about Ronia, the daughter of fierce robber Matt, who spends her time living like a wild child in the beautiful woods near Matt's Fort. When she was born, Matt's Fort was split in two by lightning, creating Hell's Gap in between the two sides. Later Matt's rival robber Borka and his crew take up residence in the other side of the fort and rename it Borka's Keep. When Ronia meets Borka's son Birk, they save each others' lives and become fast friends, but this poses problems for their warring robber clans. Woven into the story are magical Scandinavian-esque creatures that live in the forest and make life difficult for humans--harpies (I guess they're more Greek(?)), gray dwarves, rumphobs, murk trolls, and the terrible Unearthly Ones who try to call people down to the Underworld with their mysterious song. I loved this book--it was perfectly paced and all of the characters felt real. It shines with a loving friendship that is almost certain to one day lead to romance, and the heartache of a stubborn father learning to accept his headstrong daughter even when he doesn't agree with her choices. Incidentally, the Swedish-made 1984 movie of this book is on YouTube in 12 parts--it's a little cheesy and I can't understand a word they're saying, but it might be kind of fun to watch.
