One of my favorite books. Something I will never sell or give away. I generally don't re-read fiction, but this is an exception.

My first Roald Dahl book. Intoxicatingly and fascinatingly morbid. Has anyone not read this?

This was really a pretty easy read, despite being nearly 300 years old, and an engaging tale of what life might have been like for a single woman with no fortune to "recommend" her to society. The moral tale aside, you could see the few alternatives available to any woman of this time without money or family or friends to support her.

Wow. What an excellent book. I'd give it more than 5 stars if it were possible.

A great series about kids making money out West in times much simpler than this. And the lessons learned from being both entrepreneurial, and honest.

we were going to Guernsey on our cruise and my friend Carol suggested this book. From the title I thought it would just be a light read - and it partially is. But, the backdrop for the story is the German occupation of Guernsey during WWII - the only part of the UK that was occupied. It's a good read - recent book - but written as a series of letters back and forth between a London based writer and the "literary society" members and then letters between the writer and her friends in London when she goes to visit Guernsey.

The first part of the book is hard to follow as it is: 1) Germans invade Rome and set up their pope 2) Germans go home because the summer is too hot 3) Romans revolt and set up their own pope 4) Germans invade again Repeat until Renaissance. Once you get past that, the rest of the book is quite interesting, and as usual, the villains are much more interesting than the saints, especially the Borgias. The recent history with Pius XII and WWII, Vatican II, the alleged murder of John Paul I, the fact that John Paul II created more saints than all the other popes combined, and the tenuous start to Benedict XVI make for fascinating reading at the end.

I was really looking forward to this second book in the series after reading and LOVING uglies but this book unfortunetly a bit of a let-down, it took me a long time to get through, and i felt like i was constantly bored. I honestly thought this book was going to focus more on Talley's life as being a pretty but it was more about her escaping being a pretty and being on the outside again. I kept wanting something exciting to happen, but for me it just didn't happen. The love triangle or lack there of between David, Zane and Tally kind-of bothered me too, because I felt like it just hung there without anything of real substance happening. I think a lot of people will probably disagree with this review because I know a lot of people loved it, but different strokes for different folks I guess. I didn't hate it, it just didn't fufill my expectations and was lacking something for me. I plan on continuing with the series and finishing it, because theres only two books left, but I sincerely hope that specials picks up for me!!

i worked at mcdonald's in high school so already was pretty well committed to never ever eating there, but this book further hardened by reserve.
