This sixth installment in the Harry Potter series is fascinating, but also dark. Voldemort has risen to pwer and everyone knows it, but Harry, his friends at Hogwarts, and the Order of the Pheonix do not give up in trying to defeat him. I enjoyed this book a lot more than the previous book because of the characters. While the book got darker and creepier, the characters seemed more enjoyable in this book than the last. To me that is a big part in a good piece of literature. The theme and mood in this book is a lot darker, but it makes the story a lot more intense. Harry learns more about Voldemort's past, which he hopes will help him in defeating Lord Voldemort. I would suggest this book to everyone, but do not read this book first if you have not read any of the previous books, for this book is the most confusing book if you do not know any background information.

If the ending had tied up ends better it would have been 5 star, a very good read though.

Edited to add: FYI, Forsaken is the title of The Demon Trapper's Daughter in the UK. They are one and the same. So maybe this is a sign that I'm getting indecisive in my old age, but I'm having a hard time making up my mind about The Demon Trapper's Daughter. Don't get me wrong, I was enough of a fan that I'll definitely pick up book #2 when it comes out in the fall. This first book has a lot going for it--namely a spunky yet relatable heroine (Riley) with clear goals in life (voila, instant plot), as well as lots of drama and a good dose of bad luck. There are plenty of interesting guys, including a caring father, a long-time best-friend-who-might-want-to-be-more (Peter), and 3 (yes, three)good looking guys who think she's hot stuff. Hunky hero #1 (Beck) comes with a dark and secretive past and a parent complex, hunky hero #2 (Simon) supplies the goody-two-shoes persona and golden boy charisma, and hunky hero #3 (Ori) is our tall dark & hansome Mr. Mysterious. The demons she hunts provide both adventure and a bit of humor here and there. DTD truely is a good story, so why wasn't I in love after finishing it? Well, for one I wasn't a big fan of Riley's internal monologue. Here she is, this strong young woman who is mature beyond her years, both because that's just who she is and because of the hard knocks life's dealt her. And yet her internal monologue sounds like a 12-year-old's. Example: "What is it with these people? Do they, like, give them happy pills or something?" I don't know, but I get this feeling that YA authors think they have to use young and hip language in order for their teenage characters to feel authentic. I obviously shouldn't be commenting on the topic (did you note my opening comment?), but I can assure you that EVEN at that age I NEVER thought or talked like that. Sure, some girls did, but they weren't the kind of girls I hung out with...or want to read books about. Second, Ms. Oliver needs to hire a new editor. OK, I'm overly anal, but the missing commas, lost periods, and incorrect pronouns (Riley became a "him" at least once) really detracted from the story. That said, I will still recommend TDTD to my YA urban fantasy-loving friends :) ~ 4.5.11: So I felt the need to update my DTD review. After I read the book, I wasn’t convinced that the book was wonderfully awesome. Good? Yes. Awesome? Hmm, maybe. But now? Time to upgrade to “awesome!”. Why the change of heart? Well, since I read a lot, I have a tendency to forget details of previous books after I start a new one. (Dude, I can only have so many characters in my head at the same time!) I’ve read 6 books (8 if you count the two I’m currently reading) since finishing DTD and I STILL can’t get Riley out of my head. Nuff said.

Why doesn't fucking goodreads list my books on the "read" list in the order that I read them? Why does this book appear all the waaaay down the list, instead of as the most recent book I've read? Fuck, that's annoying. Anyway, this is yet another book that easily captures the title of one of the weirdest I've ever read. Whatever Aira is smoking, I want some of it. There's a lot to unpack in here: a 19th-century landscape painter travels to Argentina, gets hit by lightning, and continues wandering the country with his horrendously scarred face covered by a woman's funeral shroud. Is this a manifesto about art? A reflection on foreign influences in Argentina? The question of civilization vs. barbarity written as fiction? All this and more, in less than 90 pages. It's really quite impressive. I think if I reread it (and in one slow, drawn-out sitting, as opposed to broken up fragments from me getting on and off the bus and other constant interruptions) I would get a lot more out of it.

The only reason I even picked up Girl At Sea was because A) I recognized the author's name from 13 Little Blue Envelopes and B) I wanted to walk out of the library with something. So I picked this up. At first, I didn't really like it. Clio seemed like this bratty 17-year-old who has to throw a fit when she doesn't get her way. Some of it is sort of called for, but I thought she took it too far once or twice. It was only after a friend said she'd read it that I kept going. And I was pleasantly surprised. The ending was, possibly, a little predictable, but nice. There was one small twist I didn't see coming, which was good. I actually had a hard time putting it down to go to bed. It redeemed itself after all. It's a good read if you like treasure hunting.

A fascinating, interwoven story of the life of a book, the Sarajevo Haggadah, told backwards, following the clues a conservationist discovers in the present day. I personally enjoyed the historic stories more than the the contemporary story, although it was fun to journey with her as she discovers the meaning behind the clues left in the book. So much tragedy, but also so much hope and cooperation among diverse people surrounded this book on its journey!

Well, I thought I would LOVE this book, but in reality, I just don't care enough about foods I won't eat (brain soup, for instance), nor the minutiae that is involved in ordering, buying and preparing it. I did think the details on turn of the century Boston were delightful - just don't have time to read the whole thing right now. Shelved.

I watched the movie, didn't understand it, read the book and LOVED it, finally understood the movie. Holly Golightly is a much more interesting character than even Audrey Hepburn can convey, so if you've seen the movie and haven't read the novella, you're really missing out. I also loved the other three stories in this volume, so make sure you get the "and three short stories" version of the text.

Alright, so I started this book not so sure what it would be about. I never finished it. I was excited to try a new genre, but I couldn't do it. Maybe one day I'll pick up this book again, but for now I'm going to read something else. :)
