(.)" _randonsim
Brandon Sim _randonsim — A classic. A cleverly crafted story with complicated and interesting characters that come to life on the page. I wish I knew enough spanish to read the original, but the translation does a good job of capturing the irony and wit of the language. No wonder it's one of John Cusack's favorite books...

Helen Mallicoat walters7323f35 — This book is astounding. It's about fast food... kinda. But fast food is simply the vehicle for the lesson about economics, politics, evolution... you name it. I was continually shocked that such a seemingly benign industry is so cancerous. It's simply brilliant.

zebraloew
Jakob Malek zebraloew — Along with complex and compelling they forgot confusing. The book started off okay, but the more it progressed the more confusing things became. Information that appeared to be vital to the over all plot seemed to be thrown in at the last minute when it was finally needed, catching me off guard. Information like that needs to be planted earlier in the story to help it flow more instead of in the stacatto-like pattern of a preschooler telling about their adventures at school. The characters also weren't very well developed, two demensional at best. There were too many and it became too cluttered, I now understand why writing teachers would say the few characters the better because then there's less to keep track of and you can keep a tighter reign on them. I also didn't care about any of the characters, another major thing that can make or break a story. But for Tara Bray Smith's first novel it's a good effort, the storyline being interesting and unique, a very bold undertaking. I'm wondering if she was rushed to complete the novel, because the more I think about it, the more that's how the novel, especially the latter half, felt like, rushed. I can see this novel becoming popular with a younger crowd though. Those who really liked the Daughters of the Moon series might be interested in this as well, it has the same fantasy with a teen/pop-culture twist to it that the series did.

Jesse Kinsman _3444 — The only reason I even picked up Girl At Sea was because A) I recognized the author's name from 13 Little Blue Envelopes and B) I wanted to walk out of the library with something. So I picked this up. At first, I didn't really like it. Clio seemed like this bratty 17-year-old who has to throw a fit when she doesn't get her way. Some of it is sort of called for, but I thought she took it too far once or twice. It was only after a friend said she'd read it that I kept going. And I was pleasantly surprised. The ending was, possibly, a little predictable, but nice. There was one small twist I didn't see coming, which was good. I actually had a hard time putting it down to go to bed. It redeemed itself after all. It's a good read if you like treasure hunting.

pbarricart4198
Pablo Barricarte pbarricart4198 — writing style: 5/5 story line: 4.5/5 characters: 4/5 I have read quite a few of Crichton's sci-fi novels, but this book is much different. For one it's not sci-fi. Also, the characters are a little more fleshed out; more real seeming (unlike a sci-fi novel where the characters are relatively un-important). This is the story of a group of pirates (they call themselves Privateers) trying to steal a ship full of treasure from Matancerose(I probably didn't spell that right), a heavily armored island. in their journey they encounter several seemingly fatal mishaps, but they make it back to Port Royal in the end and... well, I'm not going to spoil the story, just go read it! Overall, Thumbs up.

Alessandro Sassetti sassettial4b31 — An old childhood favorite I hadn't actually reread since I was a child. A beautiful story and a great one to end my 2013 reads.
