Disappointing. If this can be published, then I should be able to easily get a novel published.

When I first read this book, I hated it with an unreserved fiery passion befitting its main characters. I awarded it two stars because I was reluctant to give one star to a Great Work of English Literature. But really, I meant one star. It's been about five years now, and I was excited to re-read it for my book club to see if my feelings have changed at all. So far as the 'love story' goes, they haven't changed one bit. I loathe Heathcliff and Cathy. There is nothing romantic about their love; it is sick and delusional, the product of emotionally unstable characters, one a narcissist, one a sociopath. There is still nothing romantic to me about a love that does nothing but destroy. Oddly enough, because I knew that I hated these characters and did not care about their happiness or believe in their love, I was able to enjoy the story quite a bit more. Recasting Heathcliff as the villain and reading the book as a warning against the dangers of obsessive, all-consuming love, I found myself quite enjoying it by the end. That is likely not what Ms. Bronte was going for, but so it goes. I remain a Jane Eyre girl at heart.
A really wonderful, charming little book. Funny and heartwarming, with some really compelling storylines for the characters. The interwoven lives of the characters were lovely to read, and the characters themselves were brilliant, especially the delightfully written Mo and the pityable Cyrill. Would definitely recommend this for a nice comfort read, with enough mysetry to keep you hooked throughout.

I remember this book as being the one where you have to slog through a lot of Russian things to get to the "good" parts, which are Philippa coming into her own in the French, Scottish, and English courts. I am beginning to believe that Dunnett actually wrote these books about Philippa, she just didn't know that's what she wanted to do until a couple of books in. Philippa's a much more compelling character than Lymond. However, on a less-Philippa-centric reread, the Russia parts are actually quite good and contain some of the meatiest sections of the book. That does not mean, however, that I don't read the entire book with barely concealed impatience for the chapter when Certain Main Characters find themselves preforming an epic play written in verse. And all the characters start with "L." It's the best scene in the book, and one of the best in the entire series.

This book is an example of one that was built up too much by friends, so that I felt disappointed in it. I wanted more. And the ending was soo frustrating. I turned the last page and just said "WHAT? You've GOT to be kidding me." (And maybe that's a downfall with reading it on an i-pad. I really didn't know that was going to be the end. At least with a hard copy I would have realized it sooner.) With that said, I'm looking forward to discussing it because I do have lots of questions and comments. For starters, Marina's naivete about her relationship with Mr. Fox. Drove me crazy! I do like Ann Patchett's writing and Bel Canto is still one of my favorites, I just felt that I could have skipped large portions of the book and not missed much.

I Love these books! The characters are interesting and complex. The story as always twists and turns, leaving the reader wondering where it will go next. Just enough mystery, suspense and sci-fi for me! Can't wait for the next book to come out. Why'd I wait so long to read this one?!

1986 Newbery Medal Winner 1986 Scott O'Dell Award Winner Anna and Caleb live on a farm on the prairie with their father, Jacob. They miss their mother terribly, who died when Caleb was born. When Jacob puts out an ad for a new wife and mother for the two children, Sarah, a woman from coastal Maine, answers. Sarah agrees to travel to them and stay for a month, after which she'll decide if she wants to try to fill the space that their mother left behind. MacLachlan's prose is simple, but powerfully descriptive. Children will identify with Anna and Caleb's feelings of loneliness, wanting to be loved, and the excitement at the possibility of having a happy family once again. On another level, parents, or anyone who has lost someone and wondered if they could love again, will be able to identify with Jacob in this short, but poignant novel.

Of course I love it, the third story ("Heir Apparent") is mine -- full of little druidic details and an obvious love of medieval romance literature...with genderswapping masquerades and politics thrown in. The other stories run the gamut of time periods and are all marvelously sexy.

okay, another book that is probably really good once you read more than six pages, but i started this at a time when my focus was out of wack and i just simply couldn't keep up with it. i will definitely read it (i hope) sometime in the near future.

I picked this up as an audiobook and couldn't put it down. You think you know how it is going to end until the end. It leaves you going NOOOOOO. I really enjoyed the book. It did give me nightmares. As a mother of teens, my heart just aches.
