The Spirit Line Aimee Thurlo Viking Books (224) Mystery/ Multicultural 0-670-03645-5 Aimee Thurlo’s novel, The Spirit Line, follows the unique coming of age story of Crystal Manyfeathers, a young Native American girl belonging to the Dineh-Navajo community of the Four Corners region in the Southwestern US. Crystal lives in two worlds, constantly oscillating between her Navajo background and her assumed identity at the American school she attends every week. Crystal doesn’t put much stock in the traditions associated with her Navajo background, but when the time comes for her to participate in a Navajo womanhood ceremony, she complies with the traditions to please her father. However, Crystal encounters trouble when a rug she weaves for the ceremony is stolen. Now Crystal and her friend Henry much search for the missing rug and expose the thief who stole it. This convincing and didactic multicultural novel is perfect for instruction in the 9th grade classroom and satisfies many instructional standards on the state and national levels, including multicultural standards.
It was a bit confusing.

One of my favorite books of all time. A touchstone from my early adolescence - when I revisit this book, all those memories of reading it and what was happening in my life come flooding back. And I can't separate the book from the version of the movie with Kathryn Hepburn as Jo.

This book is a modern take on the fairy-at-the-bottom-of-the-garden story - with the garden being concrete with weeds overlooking the local service station, while the fairies are in the hamburger and ice-cream business. The plot beyond this initial premise is a little thin, and the text isn't exactly rip-roaringly exciting. The cartoon-esque illustrations are clear and fun. When reading this aloud I couldn't help thinking of Jethro Gibbs from the TV show NCIS (even though this book was published before the character had made it to TV). This is one of the relatively rare cases that a book is eligible for multiple 'national' awards - it was eligible for the Children's Book Council of Australia Awards because Bob Graham is Australian, and it was eligible for the Kate Greenaway Medal because the book was first published in the UK, while Bob was working there. I'd always somehow considered the Kate Greenaway Medal more prestigious. I suppose I felt this because 1) the UK must produce more children's books than Australia (given the population), 2) it has a greater cash prize 3) receiving the award would almost certainly lead to a greater number of book purchases by schools and libraries and I suppose 4) a bit of cultural cringe. Thus it is interesting to note that this book only managed to make the Short List of the CBCA Picture Book of the Year, but managed to win the Kate Greenaway Medal.

This dystopian young adult book was not as good as The Hunger Games or Divergent, but I did think it was pretty good. It was fast paced and easy to read. I liked the two main characters and thought the story was pretty intriguing. I would read another book in the series if the author comes out with more.

Should be the story of my 'young' life. Goes up through attending college. I am more interested in her later years. Librivox recording.

Written by the father of a friend, we chose this book for our book club. About a mega-church in Mobile, Alabama. Well-written and a fascinating look "behind the scenes".
