The Wayfarer Redemption is worth reading, if you don't mind the fact that it's the first chapter in a longer story and you'll have to go read the next one (and probably the one after that) to finish the story. The characters are not as multi-dimnsional as I'd like, but the world-building and narrative style are commanding and innovative. The apoaclyptic tone and overwhelming odds in the storyline sometimes lead to inescapable and predictable plot twists, but the book isn't boring or overly rote. Some stronger female characters would be nice... they seem to either quietly bear their sacrifices for the sake of love and duty or strut around naked for no apparent reason.

A tourist's view of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The illustrations help provide a sense of place and are extremely easy to relate to. The artist was able to incorporate familiar objects like plastic lawn chairs and coffee mugs and sweatshirts with unfamiliar landscapes and concepts to make the story easier to digest. She also did something that I've often found lacking in graphic novels, in that she was able to use visual clues to describe the progression between frames so that I wasn't left wondering how we got there. Simple things like showing the characters rounding a corner before joining a new conversation. Much appreciated. In the end, I don't think I'll ever fully be able to wrap my brain around the Israel-Palestinian issue. It's hard to know what I would forfeit my life to defend. I can see parallels between this and most other wars. They all seem to be about a group of people who feel entitled to something and they must take it away from others to get it. No one wins. In the end, people lose and they move on. Favorite Quotes: Before I came here, I read as many firsthand accounts of the birthright experience as I could online. Many of the alumni wrote that from the moment they set foot in the land of Israel, they felt a real connection. A few even said that they felt like they were "finally home." To me, it's more like spotting a celebrity on a crowded street. Someone whose crazy life has been splashed all over the tabloid pages for years. And there they are...right in front of you. But I just wonder if it's really right for Israel to be a Jewish state. Why can't it just be a state? The [Jewish] law is a compromise for those who cannot hear the universal language [of humanity].

I really liked The Last Olympian and overall very much enjoyed the Percy Jackson series. Very funny, very adventurous and they kept me interested to the last page! Rick Riordan is a fun author. I'd recommend this modern-day Greek mythology series to anyone - they were great!

I Say A Little Prayer is an ambitious novel by E.Lynn Harris. Harris focused on a very explosive topic that no one in the black church wants to talk about: gays and lesbians in the church. I thought this topic was presented delicately and honestly in this story. I felt the emotion and conviction of Chauncey as he was trying to live his life and trying to do what God wants him to do. Readers will be moved by this story. Fans of this author's previous novels will be pleasantly surprised when two other characters Basil and Yancey make a brief appearance in this novel. But make no mistake, this is not another chapter into the lives of Basil and Raymond. This story is about Chauncey Greer. After reading this novel, I felt like E. Lynn Harris may be taking his writing into a delightful new direction. I Say A Little Prayer is a satisfying, heart wrenching story that doesn't disappoint. Filled with the plot twists, humor, and provocative insights readers expect from Harris. Like his last three novels, it is sure to rocket to the top of bestseller lists nationwide.

After reading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, I've been very excited to start the Kane Chronicles series. I'm not too familiar with Egyptian mythology (kind of just know the basics), so this book was actually quite eduational for me. There was a lot of things I didn't know about Egypt and Egypt mythology. Like the first Percy Jackson book though, I still felt like The Red Pyramid was trying to force alot into me at once. I got a bit confused with the different creatures (alot of them had similar names). Sadie and Carter were excellent protagonists for the story. They were a brother and sister who only ever met twice a year, and through the whole book they learned to discover each other. At first I thought this series would be the same as the Percy Jackson series with the kids being the children of the gods, so it was nice for the setup to be more about Sadie and Carter being descended from the pharaohs and that it was all about being the host for a god. I also liked Riordan's layout with having Sadie narrate a few chapters, then switch to Carter for a few other chapters. I admit, I did get a little confused sometimes with the switching narrator, especially if, say, Sadie narrated for about 2-3 chapters at a time, and then the narration switched to Carter for another 2-3 chapters. But it was easily to adjust to that after a while. Gotta say: loved Bast and Anubis! I think they were two of my fave characters. Bast is basically a human cat, what's not to love? And then Anubis, I've always been fascinated with that god from mythology. I think the only big problem I had with the book was that I felt it was rushed in some places, or not explained enough. There was alot to take in, especially when the revelations occured about which gods were in whose body, who was good, who was bad. It seemed like Sadie and Carter just naturally did things, and I sometimes felt like the scenarios they were dropped into didn't pose them much of a challenge---there was always an easy way out, or a character just happened to rescue them in the nick of time. Events felt kind of random rather than having a point A to B to C. Overally, I did like the book though, especially the characters. Plus, I learned alot of about Egypt!
