This is the only children's book I can read diligently without feeling like I'm regressing back to childhood. There's something unusual about it. I think it has to do with the fact that the little girl is not like a normal child. In fact, it is stated that she has the demure of a bruised adult.

I love reading about unorthodox, adventurous, Victorian-era women and had recently wanted to know more about Nellie Bly. Kroeger's portrait of Bly is both thorough and balanced. I came away with less respect for Bly than I thought I would, but I learned more about her than I had hoped. I also came away with respect for the author.

While it had some good things going -- particularly a cast of intriguing characters -- I was a bit put off by the sex scenes that were just a bit more explicit than I enjoy. So I skimmed past those and just tried to ignore them. For me the book would have been so much better if I hadn't had to cover my eyes through those scenes.

I almost gave this book three stars, but the bad language and sex put me off. The whole book was one long car chase, and the love interest was developed so quickly that is was unbelievable. I ended up speed reading through the last half of it just to see how it ended.

I'm halfway through this book. I'm evaluating it for inclusion in a literature unit I'm designing for an 11th-12th grade classroom. It's written from the perspective of a young teenage girl who has been raped by a high school boy. The girl gives great insight into how teenagers perceive the strategies tried by their teachers. So far the book is funny with an insight into a girl coping with her loss of security and dysfunctional family.

Going into this book, all I knew about Madame Tussaud is that there are wax museums by that name. I had no idea that the real Madame Tussaud was a fairly well-known figure in revolutionary and pre-revolutionary France. She spanned the gulf of royalist, teaching wax figure making to the king's sister, and revolutionary, hosting many of the best known leaders of the age. She made death masks of many killed during the terror, including the king and queen, after their executions. While some details are of course fictionalized for this story, the entirety of Marie's life was quite interesting to me.
