My eyes are a little blurry while I type this because I couldn't put this book down! Just finished reading this on a school Nook (love that device). High school junior Violet has a special talent -- she can sense murdered corpses through what she calls their echo, which can be a sound, a light, a color, or a vibration that calls out to her. She found her first dead body buried in the woods when she was 8, and has a cemetery in her back yard full of animal corpses. Her best friend since first grade, Jay, seems to understand her "gift", or at least accept that she has a unique ability. As they start their junior year, and suddenly Violet is seeing Jay with new eyes -- when did he grow so tall? his voice get so deep? did he become so disarmingly handsome? -- there's a serial killer on the loose and the echoes of murdered young girls begin calling out to Violet. The author lets us into the head of the killer which increases the creepy factor, but keeps things vague and appropriate for the YA audience. Girls will LOVE the romance in this novel, but boys can enjoy it too for the murder-mystery thrill.

i would probably give this book 2 1/2 stars. I enjoyed reading this book, but over all enjoy a 'happily ever after' ending.... Makes you think about what evil really is...maybe people are just understood? Interested to see the musical someday, does it pretty much stick to the book?

I thought I had it all figured out. I was wrong, again. Per usual, red herrings abound in this Inspector Wexford centered mystery. A woman is found dead in her home; she's been strangled by what appears to be a gilded necklace. The only evidence? Three coarse hairs and a fingerprint showing a small half-moon scar. It's 1975, so there aren't any computer data bases, and other modern detective devices, which makes Inspector Wexford's job all the more difficult, and interesting. Ruth Rendell is a powerhouse when it comes to characterization. Her economy of language is admirable. She is able to conjure up fantastic visuals, not only in character appearance, but also in their behaviors, with only a few words. I used to read the series out of order, and I'm glad I've turned around to reading Rendell's earliest work. Inspector Wexford shows major character development book by book, and his connections within the London scene, as well as his home life, make for a much more satisfying and sensical read. I did find fault with the endless descriptions of who crossed what street, rode the tube to what station, and took the bus to what stop, but those bits are easily skimmed, and as long as you get the general idea, they aren't important to the story as a whole, although I understand why she included them. It ends neatly with a clever twist, loose ends are tied up in surprising ways, and I was left satisfied. Hooray! 3.5 stars.

Brian’s Hunt Evan Christen 8-3 3-31-09 I really liked this book because it talked about a young boy who left the busy city life to live along with the animals and nature. I think the book was made to influence opinion on saving the wilderness or what is left of it. It also talks about how there are still Indians who live in the wilderness on reservations that they have lived on for many years, they’ve lived off the land and animals for survival for many years. The main character in the book is a young boy named Brian. He has lived in the wilderness for his 3rd year in the book after he moved out of the city. In the book it talks about him befriending an Indian family. His life in the wilderness is going pretty well until he finds a wounded dog. That is when the story really twists. I think this book is for people who like books about the great outdoors with a lot of suspense.

Amusing and quirky, though a lot more technical than I expected from the reviews. It has made me change my default font for working on my computer to Georgia (the most readable serif font on a computer screen, apparently) and made me feel quite good about preferring Garamond ("respectable yet warm"). So ultimately, a successful read. But caution: It's by a British author, so at least some of the discussions refer to UK logos (e.g., he assumes you have a sense of what the Sainsburys or Marks & Spencer sign looks like).

This was probably my least favorite from the series so far. It wasn't bad per se I just had a harder time getting into it. For me personally I could've done without the book entirely. It was kind of like the second book, okay but not very relevant to the main characters.

Beautifully written story of two sisters who are conjoined. They live in a small town, where everyone knows them as "The Girls". As with any other sisters, they are very different people but unlike every other set of sisters, they are often viewed as "one". The author has done an amazing job of creating two completely seperate voices and manages to weave a haunting story based on two characters' perspectives who are literally at the same place, at the same time--always. Rose, Ruby and their families and friends feel so real throughout the book. It's impossible not to feel sorry and happy for them...they struggle to maintain their individuality, some people view them as "monsters" or one person with two heads but they have a wonderful family full of support and love...and their very best friend around when they need 'em. THE GIRLS is written as an autobiography, started by Rose to tell the story of her life -- and, with it, the story of Ruby's life, as well. Interspersed with chapters written by Ruby herself, the story doesn't always unfold in chronological order. The things Rose deems important, of course, don't always coincide with what Ruby believes to be necessity. This is a story of love, loss, friendship and truth vs. perception. I think you'll enjoy it.
