A re-read after many years, the author has a wonderful, strong voice, with a wry, slick sense of humor. Reading it again made me more aware of the sadness underneath the humor, though-- or maybe just reading it as an adult.

Isn't it great when you find a series of books that you really enjoy, and then can't wait for a new one to come out? The Harry Dresden series burst onto my bookcase last year, when I picked up book 7 at the library, on a whim, just before a business trip. 2 days into the trip, I'd finished the book (Dead Beat) and had found the local book store and bought the first in the series: Storm Front. Ironically, in the first few pages, the book didn't really resonate for me, it took a bit to get into the main character, Harry. But after the first couple of chapters I was hooked, and it's been a great time hanging out with Harry ever since. The essentials: Harry's a wizard. Still with me? He lives in modern day Chicago and works as a sort of private investigator. Think Buffy, but less cheeky. He consults for the Chicago Police Department. People around him are largely skeptical of his abilites, etc., and he's occasionally pegged as a nutter. The assorted werewolves, vampires and demons don't doubt him. He's got a healthy amount of self doubt, he's frequently scared and tired, but he's motivated by a sense of duty and general stubbonness (OK he's a smart ass) and he refuses to let the bad guy win. He's got a bunch of friends and colleagues that develop as the books do. Really there's not a dud in the books, although they do tend to alternate more serious themes with more light ones. Sci Fi channel started a show in january based on the books, it's not bad. But the books are better.
