because for some reasons the engineer's trilogy didn't teach me that lesson.

Being a fan of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera I was persuaded by my other friends to read Phantomby Susan Kay. I was not dissapointed by the plot, or the way that his new author portraied Erik. I liked how Kay told the story from the viewpoint of some of the most influencial people in Erik's life, starting with his mother, and ending with Raoul de Changey.

Beautifully written, evocative. Paul is the superintendent of schools in rural Montana and faces making a descision regarding closing one-room school houses. As he muses over what to do, he looks back on a pivotal year in his youth, 1909, when his widower father took on a housekeeper to help care for Paul and his brothers in rural Montana. Rose, the housekeeper, brought along her brother Morris who became the teacher of the town's one-room schoolhouse, providing the boys with "several kinds of education". A good old-fashioned novel with colorful, eccentric characters.

i extracted this yarn over two inter-state flight sessions just after xmas 08 - i really liked it, although i find the heavy booze vibe not really to my taste - i feel there's a better narrative structure within the tale but overall enjoyed it and was moved by its auto-biographical insight - a perfect ending

3 stars - means I like it. But "Quantum: Einstein, Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality" it is not.

Historical fiction book about a family in the town of Cripple Creek, Colorado in the late 1800's. Based on the author's own grandfather's experiences, a mining accident leaves the father without his leg. This effects the family, which consists of Mom, Dad, and one daughter. The daughter, Mary, helps Dad to see that his "reminders," small handcrafted wooden renderings of people he knows, are valuable treasures. He learns he can be more than a miner. This would be a great book for kids who have parents that have suffered injuries, such as parents that come back injured from war or that receive an injury on the job. You see a small glimpse of the father's pain through the way he interacts differently with his family as he tries to adjust to life without his leg.

Once again on the search for Scandanavian mysteries beyond those of Stieg Larsson. Picked up my first in the Kurt Wallender series – very highly regarded by critics. Mankell is one of the most often translated European mystery writers. Kurt Wallender is an interesting policeman portrayed as a flawed human being in a literary style. The novels are in the same league as those of P.D. James, high praise indeed. The mood is dark and it's always foggy and rainy, and the cases are opaque and murky. You can see that these novels must have inspired Steig Larson who took the Swedish international crime and corruption theme in a new direction. This particular novel dates back to the early 1990's when computers were clunkier and radio phones not yet cell phones. Kurt has just returned from more than a year's absence from the Ystad police department because he shot a man in the line of duty and this event precipitated a breakdown. He has been called back when his friend has been murdered. Kurt is a loner at once stubborn and chaotic; he struggles with rage and alcoholism. Even so,from his weaknesses he demonstrates strength. He seems to possess a deep held moral compass in spite of his habit of not following police procedures. There are more than 15 Mankell novels, a reassuring fact to keep me going in the years ahead.
