Rachel Gorman rachelrene — Cantor's In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death & The World it Made is a concise work that looks at recent scientific discoveries to show the reader how the Black Death as a biomedical disaster affected Europe, in particular England. Although In the Wake of the Plague is only 220 pages it packs quite the punch as Cantor looks at the cultural, political, religious and human reactions to the Black Death. He moves away from the common myths of the Black Death (i.e. that it was just the bubonic plague) and paints Fourteenth Century England and Europe as a society already on the verge of change when the Black Death hit.

Dawn Schuster dawnsimone — Another great book from Wally Lamb. He does such a good psychological study of his characters and once again, he points out the importance of telling the truth.

Piyush Jingar _ingar — 3 and a half stars really but there were some problems with the characterisation. The narrator's voice was very British but still much too much a generic character rather than anyone British who we could meet. I felt that the experience was meant to show us how diminished he was by the experience (and how boring his fiancee must be to be attracted enough to wish to marry him). The other characters, because decsribed by the narrator, were second hand and not well defined. The main subject was Moscow and Russia itself which was made real and fascinating to me. The depth of opportunism portrayed was eye opening but not surprising and by the end I felt that there was nothing that stood between kindness and greed there - difficult to take on board for the 21st century.

Estitxu Losa estitxulosa — This had a fun yet different viewpoint on pride and prejudice.

程 昱嘉 denniseb45 — Un llibre diferent, curiós, ple de reflexions que més d'una vegada en fet per nosaltres mateixos; algunes no fa molt, altres les hen olvidades des de la nostra infantesa... Amb capitols curts, és de lectura ràpida. Però has de tenir cura, perquè si les ments analítiques i amb poca sensibilitat no t'atrauen pot ser que aquest llibre no t'agradi. Les emocions no són el punt fort de Christopher, el protagonista, encara que les té... però no sempre les comprèn (menys en altres) i no sap expressar-les com altres persones. A mí em va agradar molt per la lògica aplastant que utilitza en moltes de les seves reflexions i deduccions, a més d'algunes curiositats sobre matemàtiques i ciència de les que parla (atenció al nombre de capitols! ^^). El final no me l'esperaba, per això em va agradar, perquè no em semblà predictible ni esperat. Encara que puc discutir alguns punts d'aquest final... En resum, un llibre recomanable per qui vulgui ver una reflexió sobre la vida i la gent des d'un altre punt de vista; amb una mica de humor i sensibilitat.
