I read this book in high school for class, and I immediately fell in love with it. It is just so beautifully written, it's romance, it's drama, it's comedy, it's everything - and best of all it's all true. While reading this, the characters, places and situations are written so vividly I kept thinking of my family and the stories I've heard over the years. While in college, Villasenor came to our campus to sign copies of his new book and I asked him to sign my poor, tattered copy of this one and I was able to talk to him about the book, his family, my family and life. It was one of the most memorable times in my life and I'll never forget it.

This book was very hard to read for me due to alot of information not given out right off the bat. For example, the author would name a race of people and I would not know what he is talking about until maybe 60 pages later. All the weird names for the different magic types was also hard to get used to and I had to keep looking at the glossary type thing at the end of the book. There were so many times that I kept looking at the back cover, the inside cover and the beggining of the book to see if I picked up the second or third book of the series because I was just lost. The author will make you work for your information but I think it's a little too much here. The second book Deadhouse Gates was more "traditional" therefore I liked it more.
