I first read The New Life cerca 1997 or 1998 and fell in love with it then. I "won" the novel in an English Dept. Xmas party book exchange. The new prof of postcolonial lit (among other areas of expertise), Lisa Nakamura, at Sonoma State University was my "anonymous" gift-giver. I was prompted to reread the novel recently after a friend who read it with her book group admitted she found the writing (style)clunky and unsatisfying. (I had suggested the novel to them). One can admire Pamuk's novel through the looking-glass of postmodernism or postcolonialism or one can simply enjoy it as a surreal kind-of sort-of road novel cum romance cum Bildingsroman. Set in "modern" Turkey, where the existential mode of transport for young seekers is neither the railroads of the European Lost Generation nor the automobile of 50's and forward American youth, but the bus. On the Road here means On the Bus and it is on board that life, love, death, politics and philosophy play themselves out.

Very interesting, fast read. Though I think I liked "the strange incident of the dog in the nighttime" better. Both book are told from the perspective of a child.

I won this book via a First Reads Contest and was glad I did. The voice of the protagonist is quirky and conversational. The characters and plot twists are intriguing. Overall it was a fun, light read.

People often judge a book by its size and the font size, however, this book begs to differ. It means a lot to everyone, especially the adults, who live a busy life forgetting what they once dreamed of, what they hoped for. The Little Prince will bring you back to your childhood, time when you once understood things differently. It will make your heart warm and you will keep it close to your heart always if you took time to read it carefully for what it really is, not a children's picture book.

First, I have to commend Ms Laurie for the ending of this book -I did not see it coming. Most cozies (I think this book is a cozy, but her writing style is starting to change) writers follow a conventional plan and lead you down a rosy path to a predictable ending where all the loose ends are tied up and they all live happily ever after. This one, on the other hand, has a nice twist at the end that has you wondering, “what did I miss”. Loved that. Following up where the last one ended, Abby is now a FBI Civilian Profiler and has been thrown into a very precarious position with Dutch. They must fill the shoes of a weapons dealer and track down a drone aircraft before it falls into the wrong hands. Lots of bumps and bruises later both Dutch and Abby find themselves in a life or death struggle with a suspect that they thought they had seen the last of. But no, even Abby’s psychic abilities did not see this one coming. Vision Impossible is a definite departure from the previous books in this series. For the most part, the usual characters are missing and the storyline is much edgier, not the usual funny escapades that Abby usually finds herself and her “crew” in. Don’t know if this is the new future for this series, I cannot say that it is a bad direction, just different. I hope she brings back her old friends and some more of the crazy antics, we will just have to wait and see what new path Abbey and her abilities will go down next.

Great ideas, just a tough one to wade through (disclosure - I didn't make it to the end). I like Atran's approach better than many "new atheist" thinkers who take impassioned and sometimes self righteous stands against religion as they try to explain how it fits into an evolutionary framework. However this book is not particularly focused and (as another reviewer noted) could use considerable editing.
