Steven Boyd mrmikependa556 — This book portrayed the politics of post 9/11 New York in such a depressingly accurate and true-to-life way that I really can't say I enjoyed it, although the writing was quite good and it rung so true I had to keep reminding myself that it was a fictional story. It's about how a jury to pick the Ground Zero memorial decided on one design from a bunch of anonymous submissions - and then discovered that the submission was designed by a (secular-minded) Muslim architect. Of course this was immediately leaked to the press and a huge, ugly storm of media frenzy, grief-stricken families of the 9/11 victims, and self-serving politicians descends on New York. This may be enjoyed by fans of Ann Patchett's book State of Wonder, because I found the style and tone of this book similar to hers.

Babacar Birane babacarbirane — I wish the wrongful memory of this book could be wiped from the planet. The character of Uncle Tom has come to symbolize servile weakness and stupidity. This was NOT in the book, but came about over time as the book's popularity morphed into a popular culture that was deeply racist. Uncle Tom is, in fact, the strength of the book. He is the courageous one who stands by what he believes, no matter the pain it causes him. I was so moved by this book, I want to read it over and over.

Chiara Bosio graffafette — Great ideas, just a tough one to wade through (disclosure - I didn't make it to the end). I like Atran's approach better than many "new atheist" thinkers who take impassioned and sometimes self righteous stands against religion as they try to explain how it fits into an evolutionary framework. However this book is not particularly focused and (as another reviewer noted) could use considerable editing.
