I love Octavia Butler’s stuff, such a unique voice. The two books in this series are the closest depiction of what I think the future will be like.

** spoiler alert ** Hooked to the storyline from the onset, but as others have said, Carroll throws in more and more weird situations/developments that you'll either go along for the rest of the ride (curious to see how it ends) or put the book down and give up. I enjoyed the book overall, although I did do the "eyeroll" motion (and thought "C'mon Jonathan, that just reads kind of lame) during the dancing displays by characters later in the book (Cop Rock, anyone?). Talking dogs, verz', and ghosts...I can take in and enjoy. Breaking out a la West Side Story...I'll skim those parts when I re-read it.

Liked this book although some ideas are not easily "franchised" in some businesses. Partnerships are a viable option. Our book club drilled down on one person's business and it became apparent how important that person was to the company's operations. A good lesson for all of us! I especially liked the Organizational Chart leading to an exit strategy. This acts as a goal setting activity as well.

This is for foodies. It's a hysterical view of one woman's determination to accomplish something important in the year she turns thirty. Julie plans to cook every single one of the recipes in the classic Julia Child's cookbook : Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The book comes from the blogging the author did of her experiment. It's fun, it's kooky, it's hysterically New York in mood and feel. I loved it. Then again I buy cookbooks to drool over recipes I will never ever make.

An ok idea, combined way too much fantasy and science fiction though... Not the end of the story which was way more than annoying. (Turns out there are another two books to go with it.) I really only like a couple of the many storylines. Probably not worth how long it takes to read.

What a dysfunctional family...and yet a son wants to pay tribute to a mother who did everything the "wrong way". This woman renounced her birth family, her heritage, engaged in a forbidden interracial relationship, travelled far from her community, had an unconventional relationship that looked like no marriage on TV, had dubious child rearing practices, less than admirable housekeeping skills and practically scammed ways for getting her kids into better schools and money for education. This is the mother the author wants to remember? And all the kids managed to make successes of themselves in some way shape or form. Some people in the book club felt that the story was not worth telling. They say that every family has members who face adversity and succeed in spite of them. This may be true but I also think that there are too many people making excuses about why they don't succeed and what obstacles they had to face and whoa is me. This story gave insight to a strong woman who had real losses in her life including the loss of identity, loss of community, loss of a conventional life. These are kids who were caught in the middle of racial tension, not really knowing which race laid claim to them. And yet despite all this, mom kept them together, giving them a "home base" and the resourcefulness to not only survive but to excel. In a way I wish Mr. McBride had not used the subtitle based on racial descriptors. I think this sensationalizes the story. Although race plays an important part in the story it should not be boiled down to this.

Things I liked: Felicity, Gemma (sometimes), Ann (sometimes), Pippa (eventually), the school/setting, the gypsies, the writing, the anachronistic attitudes of the girls (they were pretty modern Victorians, but that's good), the girls being jerks. Things I didn't like: The YA "special destiny" thing, the secrets (I hate it when a plot hinges on people being secretive for no apparent reason or just bad communicators - why not be CLEAR?). Things I scratched my head about: India - seems like it would be a big adjustment to live your whole life in India and suddenly find yourself in the English countryside, but other than the prologue, it never comes up. Weird. The reveal - it was confusing, or maybe that's just me. I think we were being set up to think it would be one person and then in the end it was another person (which, in some ways is the most obvious person) but something about the way it unfolded confused me and required me to go back and re-read earlier bits. Maybe it was just me and the fact that I had to read this in in little chunks on the bus rather than all in one long sitting. Anyway. I will definitely read the next in the series, have already ordered it for the library actually, but as it is set at Christmastime I will wait to process it in December.

Genel olarak, bu gerçekten keyif aldım. Öte yandan King, dikkat çekici derecede tatsız sahneler içeremedi: biri siyah bir kadın ve azgın bir iblis içeriyor, artık söylemeyeceğim. Özellikle King'in Odessa karakterindeki 'kara dilsel' konuşmayı taklit etme konusundaki utanç verici girişimlerine itiraz ediyorum.
