The only thing I can say is, if you dig Karl, you'll dig this book. I could totally hear in my head him speaking the words on the page. I don't have the television channel to watch "An Idiot Abroad." This book gave me a quick, satisfying dose of the Pilk.

The war in southern Sudan that Deng (the narrator: he told his story to Eggers, who wrote the book as a fictionalized memoir) is a survivor of lasted for more than twenty years, from 1983 on. Trapped between two forces, the civilians, Deng included, had no place to turn. To me, one of the most affecting parts of the story was that some people wanted to believe that the government was there to protect them even after it became clear to most that they were on their own. Those who did try to flee to Khartoum were killed or enslaved. Although Deng's sympathies lay with the SPLA, they were little, if any, better about protecting civilians, and were brutal to soldiers and deserters. Eggers' interweaving of past and present in the narrative could easily seem ham-fisted, but in this case it worked for me. He is clearly trying to keep the story relevant to the present, so the reader won't think, "Oh, well, good thing that war is over and Valentino made it out okay."
