Overall, I think this story had great potential, but I just don't think it delivered. I got the feeling that the really interesting parts where being withheld. I wanted to stop reading several times, but kept at it thinking i was going to read the bit that tied it all together. I was disappointed at the end that something important still eluded me. I would like to have a discussion with others who liked the book to see what it was that I didn't quite get.

Nice ideas that are interesting to contemplate and make the reader much more aware of certain language characteristics in a conceptual context. But mediocre in terms of writing style and ability to hold interest. I almost wish i could find Mr. Lakoff and have an actual conversation with him rather than read what can often be rather dry writing.

Ein Stern nur deshalb, weil weniger nicht möglich ist. Spart Euch die Zeit und das Geld.

Written from an evangelical Protestant perspective, this is a suspenseful novel that shows the interplay between the visible world in which we live and the spiritual world of angels and demons. The title is taken from Ephesians 6:12, which states, "For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." Peretti's novel deals with an embattled minister and a newspaper editor in a small town who find themselves pitted against a cadre of New Age conspirators who are attempting to convert the townspeople, especially the students at a local college, to their belief system. The story is told on two levels: on one hand, we see the interactions of ordinary human beings with one another, but "behind the scenes" we also see how various angelic and demonic beings exert influence over their human charges. The book is reminiscent in some ways of C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" but is quite different in style, being a sort of Christian suspense thriller. Very entertaining and also quite thought-provoking, in that it provides a window into the greater cosmic battle of which our earthly struggle is a part, and also illustrates the power and efficacy of prayer as we see various characters turning to God for help and receiving it through the mediation of His angels.
