The book was solace to me in high school. Having experienced the cruelty of hazing my freshman year by much larger boys, the savage nature and cruelty of youth was not shocking to me. I have used this as a teacher as well. My hope was that there might be a student that this book could speak to as it spoke to me. It is great for discussion... about cliques, about base nature vs. better nature...

What a book! Uneven writing, an amalgam of themes from classics, more info about raising dogs than we'd want to know and enough tension to make me want to abandon all other activities until I finished the book.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The plot has an interesting element - the suspects in the murder are spread across the country and connected via an email list (focused on the topic of video game design). Because of this, it doesn't have the usual sleuthing you expect in a cozy-style mystery. But Anneke and Karl manage to find a way to do some sleuthing, by taking it online. Intriguing! The computer components are dated in some ways - for example, the way Anneke dissects their web sites (the details of what a web site would contain back then), the constant references to Altavista as her main search engine, being startled when something turns up a couple hundred hits (today we'd be shocked if it was that few). But others are still with us: private email lists focused on narrow topics, newsgroups like comp.lang.c++, and others. And the debate about game design for girls is pretty similar to what it was then (except perhaps the percentage of games for girls is higher, and the violence in games overall is higher as well). Overall, it doesn't detract from the story - and the nascent 'social network' they move in is an essential component of the plot.

From the Publisher No one on the plantation had ever heard the Old African's voice, yet he had spoken to all of them in their minds. For the Old African had the power to see the color of a person's soul and read his thoughts as if they were words on a page. Now it was time to act -- time to lead his fellow slaves to the Water-That-Stretched-Forever, and from there back to Africa. Back to their home. Based on legend and infused with magical realism, this haunting tale is beautiful in both its language and its images. Julius Lester and Jerry Pinkney have found a new, extraordinary way to express the horrors of slavery and the hope and strength that managed to overcome its grip.

This story was about a young boy who went missing. The fortune teller had told his mom that his presence was always with her. One day his father and mother got a call from a person asking them to fly to Europe to come and identify if the dead body was their son. Indeed it was there son. They flew back and buried Derek. Derek's sister Maxine began getting phone calls saying that it was Derek. At first she didn't know what to believe. She began pondering the whole idea of it. Thinking that it could really actually be him, it could be him as a ghost, or it could be someone playing a really mean joke on her. One day Maxine got another call claiming to be from her brother. He had told her to meet him at his grave after school that day. When she arrived she saw Derek's arch enemy. He began beating Maxine up. Derek began pretending that he was a spirit scaring him. Derek had never died. He ran away from home, but was scared back to his family when he read his own death in the paper.

This book was so good. It kind of reminded me of the Giver. Tally lives in a futuristic society where everyone turns "pretty" on their 16th birthday. When she meets Shay, Tally learns all new things about her city and surrounding cities. Now Tally's not sure if she wants to turn pretty or if she'll be allowed to. Throw in a romance and it's perfect!!

Very well-written and raises a lot of good questions about faith and other things. Feel like it could always be worth a re-read.
