This is one of my favorite books, written by a great Mississippi writer. Brown tells this story of Fay, a poor white teenager alone in the world without support, with compassion and without judgment. The characters of Sam, the highway patrolman, and Aaron, the strip-joint bouncer, are wonderfully portrayed. The story is quite violent, but ends with some hope for Fay. It was refreshing for me to read a grittier depiction of the poor, backwoods South, not just the "moonlight and magnolias" version that we so often see.

I read this book while trying to catch my breath after a stunning breakup. It was just right. Walker's characters here are mature, soft, like gently bruised peaches groping for a sense of place in the world. This is a book about midlife crisis, about love's changes, about breathing. I loved it, and yet there was a lingering sense of incompleteness. Whether that is deliberate genius or accident I don't know, but I wanted just a little more. Still, highly recommended.
