This was really good fantasy. The fact that it was written quite a while ago only makes it even better.

I love fairy tale retellings and this was original and creative. I mostly liked how well historical details were incorporated and twisted. Not one I'd recommend to others but I enjoyed it.

- Title sums up the entire book; that's all they did. - Melodrama, not the action packed kind, but the slow soap opera gaze kind. - So slow that between one para and the next you drop off and forget what the tension is over, because nothing is actually happening, it's just in the characters' thoughts. - With the slow and painful melodrama of a soap opera stare.

Summary: Girl in foster care in Nazi Germany. She struggles to learn to read, and then she steals books. Also, her foster family is hiding a Jew in the basement. This was my first serious read in a while, but it was a very good choice. The characters were very engaging, and who doesn't love stealing, I mean reading, a good book? It is written from the perspective of Death, without being at all trite about it. WARNING: THE ENDING OF THE BOOK IS MOSTLY SAD.

A superb read. I was immediately taken in by how intimate it felt to be with Egan's characters, and as the roster of unique people and perspectives expanded in unexpected ways, I was more and more taken with the book. I'm not normally into stories that weave multiple lives together in clever way, but Egan's book is not about cleverness. No plot point or intersection feels forced, everything lives and breathes on its own. There were several moments while reading the book where I felt like Egan had extracted thoughts I've carried with me my whole life with a tweezer, carefully transferring them to the page, whether she was writing from the perspective of an aging music executive or in the form of a preteen's PowerPoint. The feeling of being so close to the characters and their thoughts was unique and intoxicating. This book was a true pleasure to read. Brilliant. I can't wait to share it with people.

There were parts of this book I really loved.
This book talks about how the mind works according to how you train it to think. For instance if you have a low self-image then you train your subconscious to make you a failure. But if you strive in your conscious mind to change your thinking your subconscious will follow suit. It was written by a plastic surgeon who noticed that some of his patients, in spite of their surgery, failed to get more out of life because they still continued to feel ugly. There were also examples of people who were for the most part normal looking who couldn't get anywhere in life because they felt their nose was too big or something and it ruined their self-image. Their consciousness was locked in this way of thinking so their subconscious followed suit putting a negative hold on their lives. This book talks, using real psychology about how to break out of that way of thinking. I'm tempted to make the disclaimer that this is pre-self-help, which it is. I would file it under psychology, (as it actually was in the old-ass seventies version I read). But however it sounds to you after reading this, it was a great book that made me think.

I had a hard time getting started on this book about a woman dealing with her eccentric, neglectful, self-centered parents, but after the first couple chapters I couldn't stop reading it. The book begins with the author seeing her mom living as a homeless person and her struggle to determine how to find a place for her parents in her life. It is then made up of flashbacks from her childhood. This book reminded me of all the people who continue to be successful despite not having picture-perfect childhoods.
