Different from the average Bernard Cornwell book. The viewpoint is from a man starting at the bottom of the social ladder. To advance, he has his archery skills and his faith (including the voices of two saints in his head that help him Obi Wan Kenobi style). The battle scenes are graphic and even gruesome. Brains splatter and bones crack. Still, the viewpoint remains a common man watching extraordinary events. He may not totally understand the ramifications because he's just hoping to live to see the next morning. A reader can appreciate the historical research done to bring this world to life and that the story is told by an archer rather than a noble or a king.

I wish I was an author and could have written this book. What a great premise, and what fun the research must have been! It was a very enjoyable book, yet also very informative. A few months after I read it, we went to Key West and to the Dry Tortugas. I was the only one in our tour group who knew the answers to all of the questions about Dr. Mudd's incarceration--thanks to this book!

This is one of my top ten books. I was so wrapped up in the imagination and context of the story. It's a great look into what might be the behind-the-scenes story of the Wizard of Oz. It really makes you think about alternatives to beliefs that you've had for years, mainly, why the characters in the Wizard of Oz behaved as they did.

Well! I don’t know what I was expecting from this book but what I got certainly wasn’t it! From the title and some reviews I had read I had thought that this would be an adult vampire story where the main focus was on the relationship between the 2 main characters. I had also thought, being an adult vampire book it would have a few sex scenes thrown in for the sake of making it an adult book and that would be that. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! This is soooooo much more than a meaningless vampire love story. There is an excellent plot, unbelievably well written characters, suspense, realism and a believable romance. I was hooked. Literally from the first page I couldn’t put it down. For three nights in a row I have read into the early hours of the morning completely consumed by this story. The story is told from several POV’s. I liked this. It worked well for this type of story. It was nice to get inside the head of all the characters. It made me feel like I knew them better and understood their reasons behind things that they did. And each character was so vastly different! Beth, the half vampire (who doesn’t know it yet), Wrath the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Butch the local police officer, & Mr X, the bad guy. We heard from them all. This was what made this better than other adult paranormal books I’ve read. Although ultimately the story is the telling of Beth and Wrath’s relationship and her becoming a vampire, there are also a lot of other things going on. The looming threat of attack from their mortal enemies the Lessers, builds up throughout the story, Wrath’s personal problems with his Leelan, Marissa, causes another threat from her protective brother and the death of one of the brothers means the remaining brothers must find out who killed him and get their revenge. And then all the threads are pulled together nicely at the end. The whole thing was a complete joy to read. And, just in case the title isn’t a big enough clue for you, yes this book is adult and therefore does contain sex scenes. However I was happily surprised to find that they weren’t thrown in there for the sake of it. They were written nicely into the story and actually helped to develop the relationship between Beth and Wrath (and gave us a rare chance at seeing Wrath’s soft side!). I’m now thoroughly looking forward to making my way through the rest of this series and finding out what happens next to this wonderful cast of characters!

Picoult is genious when it comes to writing relationships. The book is all about perspective and how all these different players see the same situation. The ending comes at you out of nowhere, and you had better have your tissues ready.
