YA novel (first in series of four) set in a dystopian future society that mandates cosmetic surgery at 16 so that everyone is "pretty". Interesting points about societal pressures to fit in and look like everyone else, and the danger of constantly bombarding people with the message that they're not good enough. Great protagonist and well plotted with dark twists - read it in one go. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Wow this is wordy! I think the story could have been told in 100 pages or less, but all of the minutae added to it make it long and drawn out. Some may enjoy this type of drama and Du Maurier is definitely a gifted author. Just maybe not for me. It reminds me a bit of Jane Eyre.

Probably the best of Dan Brown's book. But it was the first one I read, and maybe, it seemed like the best because it was the first... Problem is, much of Dan Brown's books read like cookbook recipes! Once you've read one, you've read them all. You know all the ingredients (historical mystery, secrets, conspiracies etc) and you start looking more critically at the book's writing and structure. And that's when you realize it doesn't quite hold up under the scrutiny. Peccato, what a pity as the Italians say...

These are very dry little pieces, little hypotheticals that are extremely entertaining. If you enjoy a kindof absurdist, random humor, these imagined scenarios will have you choking back moist snorts of glee. Interesting biographical note: The author is the son of noted columnist Frank Rich. Head-smacking biographical note: he's like 21 years old. Prodigies suck. For a taste, check out the excerpt printed in the New Yorker (the top one is the best, I think): [http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2007/0...]

The themes in the book are varied. There is a realistic part which is about the lives of the people around Canadaigua, New York. There is a mytical part of the book, where some of the characters in the community are healers with ties to the Seneca Indians. There is also a mystery involved. This is a many faceted book that explores the lives of its characters. Grant Shongo has returned to the area after a failed marriage to get his head together. Echo O'Connell returns to check on her foster father, Joseph, who runs the feed and seed store. They have a past reltionship that resurfaces during her visit. Maya and Melanie Elliot are two sisters who lived with their mother, Lelia. Ten years before, their brother drowned in the lake. They still see his spirit. He seems to hover around the whole town. Melanie, who has a troubled past, seems to have settles down with her boyfriend, Lion and her infant son, Luke, named after her drowned brother. One day, Melanie disappears and the whole town has a hand in trying to find her. Some townfolk suspect she has taken off with her druggie friends, but her family knows better since they feel she would never leave her baby. All during the book, the spirit of Luke hovers over everyone. Is he trying to them them where Melanie is?

A fascinating true story about a haole Hawaiian who comes from a prosperous family and ends up living on the streets of Honolulu. The story is told by and from the perspective of the main character's daughter. While the story itself is interesting, I think what kept me so enthralled throughout the book were all the references to people and places I knew growing up on Kauai. (Much of the book takes place on Kauai.) A worthwhile read for kama'aina. For others, it could be difficult to follow.

I really can't decide whether I like this book because it's something completely different than I've ever read before or hate it because, well, I don't know why. I can't decide whether I think Wray is a brilliant writer, choosing a story and writing style that hasn't been done before OR he's just as crazy as his main character and was just looking for an outlet to brag about his vast knowledge of the NYC subway system. I liked this book but I didn't like this book. I don't know. You decide.
sid probably did not kill nancy and punk rock = fag

Lovely novel. Reads very easily. I read it because I love movie and I was curious. For those who like the movie it is just as good and, of course, unHollywoodized (not as easy a happy ending).
