whoa. this book is fucking amazing. were i not already a committed anti-prison activist, this book would surely have turned me into one. shakur combines horrifying jail narratives with memories of growing up black & female in 1960's new york city, and her eventual radicalization. even though she spends years of her life literally being tortured at the hands of the US government, this book is still so full of hope & positivity. READ THIS!!!!

Was a great read! Made me laugh many times which was greatly needed after the "very" sad book I read just before this one. Besides I like a mystery intertwined with a love story.

After devouring Slaughterhouse Five not too long ago, I couldn't wait to get my hands on another Vonnegut novel. I'm not sure if all his books are connected in some way to Kilgore Trout, but I really like the small reference to SH5. As a fan of Lost and apocalypses in general, I adored this book. The interweaving stories and characters, the insightful quotations of famous figures of the past... I definitely recommend reading this one.

The plot in these books are never that important; you read it for the language and the characters. This one's a keeper: it's got Philip Marlowe, language salty enough to cure a Christmas ham, and enough wackjobs to populate an asylum. Great light reading.

This was definitely a pre-cursor to the movie What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfieffer. The dead lover (in this case, wife) haunts the home, the husband, the caretaker. It is quite an arresting text. I recommend it for high schoolers and people looking for a light read. Don't be scared by the length of the book; it is actually a something you can delve into easily.

For about the first 1/3 of the book I couldn't understand what all they hype was about but then it suddenly kicked into gear and I really got into it. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the characters; even though Diana is wishy-washy and Matthew is brooding, all the side characters support the story very nicely and make it more interesting. Alot of this book is back-story and set-up since it's part of a trilogy; the action doesn't really start until the last 1/3 of the book but it makes up for it and I like where the plot is heading. It got a bit mired down in some of the parts where it's focusing on alchemy and biology/DNA but the parts focusing on the lives of vampires, witches and demons were engrossing. A few parts were somewhat reminiscent to Twilight but it is in no way mind-numbing like Twilight was. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I stole this book from my roommate thinking I'd tear through it in a week. Sadly, I didn't really learn much from this book--and worse, I didn't enjoy it. I'm disappointed that the references weren't footnoted, or even listed in the book (the last page directs you to a website). The 'committing the deadly sins' thing got tiring, as the "Bible rules in modern life" trope is kind of played out (The Year of Living Biblically, etc). The entire book is largely a lefty reaction to Slouching Towards Gomorrah (obviously), so it's occasionally hilarious, but mostly bitter and angry--and at times, needlessly rude. But then again, that's Dan Savage. Which is fine, but the personality is endearing in podcast form isn't as effective in print. I'm hoping the reason I was bored is more to do with the subject matter than the speaker. I love the podcast; when Dan weaves his own personal stories into his advice, when sarcasms out about anal sex preserving virginity, when he calls a crying lesbian who can't deal with a breakup. That's what made me want to read this book, and what makes me still want to read The Kid--that, and the This American Life episode that featured Dan Savage talking about walking his poodle at 3 AM.

4 stars: I ended up really enjoying this book. The writing at the beginning of the novel was a bit of a turn-off as it was a bit cutesy, using descriptive phrases which normally describe sweets. The heroine, Josey, is a young woman growing up in a tourist town in the mountains of North Carolina. She lives a sheltered life due to a domineering mother, so she hoards sweets, romance novels and travel magazines in her closet. Don't want to give up too much of the story but this is a sweet story about breaking free from the past and making friendships.

George Washington hakkında çok şey öğrendik: At sürmeyi severdi, Bir savaşta savaştı, nasıl ilk başkanımız oldu, matematiği severdi ve harita yapımcısıydı.
