Liang Wang 841015wangliang — I stole this book from my roommate thinking I'd tear through it in a week. Sadly, I didn't really learn much from this book--and worse, I didn't enjoy it. I'm disappointed that the references weren't footnoted, or even listed in the book (the last page directs you to a website). The 'committing the deadly sins' thing got tiring, as the "Bible rules in modern life" trope is kind of played out (The Year of Living Biblically, etc). The entire book is largely a lefty reaction to Slouching Towards Gomorrah (obviously), so it's occasionally hilarious, but mostly bitter and angry--and at times, needlessly rude. But then again, that's Dan Savage. Which is fine, but the personality is endearing in podcast form isn't as effective in print. I'm hoping the reason I was bored is more to do with the subject matter than the speaker. I love the podcast; when Dan weaves his own personal stories into his advice, when sarcasms out about anal sex preserving virginity, when he calls a crying lesbian who can't deal with a breakup. That's what made me want to read this book, and what makes me still want to read The Kid--that, and the This American Life episode that featured Dan Savage talking about walking his poodle at 3 AM.

j2wstudio
Ji Won j2wstudio — I've been dismissing this book till now, judging it from its cover or more precisely, all the covers of all the editions of this book featuring the same 'come-hither' look. If the characters are complex, the plotline is appealing, there is some realism in the story, and the protagonist is not a two-bit slut going into season every full moon(as in a lot of YA "romance" books, full of forbidden love and love-triangles/quadrilaterals, etc, flying around on Goodreads, all rip-offs of each other; see here: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/22... ), I will certainly read it. My hate for the books mentioned within the parentheses comes from a time before I'd discovered Goodreads, when I'd finished Vampire Academy & Twilight and such, and a google search 'books like vampire academy' sent me to sites featuring apparently "enthralling" books with lots of shapeshifting, magic and romance. What came as a surprise (not a very pleasant one) was the vivid descriptions of a number of slutty activities, that repulsed me, a boy of 14 or so. I'd never found any such descriptions in Vampire Academy or Twilight, and was horrified to find these fully described in books that are apparently "books+like+vampire+academy". This is what led to my prejudice against all such books, which I still haven't overcome. And looking at the cover of 'Poison Study', when I find a girl (woman?) beckoning, I immediately dismissed it. This was when I first encountered this book, when I first discovered the enormous resource that is Goodreads, and had no friends who could give good ratings & reviews to this book and propel me to read it. Now, I come back few years later and find six friend reviews with good things to say of this book. And then my eye falls on the number of ratings and reviews of this book, I begin to think my earlier dismissal of this book was probably prejudiced. So, I will now have to read this book as soon as possible. (Probably August, 2012, as I've god 12th grade finals and medical entrance exams till then, and presuming I get admitted into a good medical institution, and haven't comitted suicide out of failure to do so.)
