I have a weird relationship with this novel, which began last year, when everyone (and I mean, it felt like everyone) was telling the world this book had to be read now. Run, don't walk! to the store to get your copy BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE1. The fervor over this title led me to it last year, predictably months behind everyone else. This one was a hard one to rate for me. I've read so many of these sort of books by now that they all merge into one big category and all get a 4-star rating. Saving Zoe didn't do a great deal for me - it didn't rouse any emotions in me or make me think. It has a vague theme about meeting people off the internet, but that's nothing you don't get taught at school, along with all the 'fireworks are dangerous' and 'smoking causes lung cancer'. Maybe I'm just feeling slightly bitter, but this one is only getting 3 stars from me. It just isn't at the same standard as its other high-school novel companions.

Holy cow did I laugh a lot. It was very interesting to see what goes into a speech and the logistics behind it all. I've read it several times and it always cracks me up.

I think I would have enjoyed this book more if it didn't seem like such a copy of The Green Mile. The religious element was the only part I felt it truly differed. Unsurprisingly that was the part of the book I enjoyed the most. It was a much more academic approach to various religions and that I really enjoyed reading. Overall if you haven't seen The Green Mile I would say worth the read otherwise I think you'll feel like this story seems too much the same.

** spoiler alert ** I had such high hopes for this book. That the women, though slaves and black in 1850, might escape to freedom when they had their chance. I kept reading through the gory details of the master and slave relationship and endured through the particularly awful stories of these slave women who were raped as young girls and bore children to the plantation owners, hoping that their masters would free their children. However, there was no redemption, and the main character, Lizzie, was weak and in the end, even her epiphany of her worth was too little too late and a little abrupt. I read this book because it was billed as just as great as The Help. Don't be sucked in, my friends, unless you have a stomach of iron.

Reads like it was written by a tween. I read the entire series because I wanted to see what the hype was all about and the only one that was worth it was the final book.
