On each page is information about the life that the poem is written about.This book is fun and infomative.

I am so sorry but this book was just not for me. I won it and it was kindly signed by the author, so I felt compelled to read it. It was a struggle and it made no sense to me. It was rambling and wordy and not worth my time.

I felt this was a fairly bland book. Most of it consists of a string of amusing anecdotes, funny characters and interesting tidbits about life in New York City at the turn of the century. These elements are interspersed with sad and serious stories about abuse, poverty and alcoholism, which lend the book some pathos. My negative feelings about the book came from the little lessons and morals that the main character was continually drawing from her experiences. I’m not against that sort of thing as a rule. I think I just disagree with the author’s values and her view of life. It’s difficult for me to say what I found so offensive about the author’s view point. Perhaps I found it sentimental. When something is sentimental you are instructed about how to feel by the author instead of being allowed to draw your own conclusions from the narrative. It creates a feeling of resentment in the reader. I imagine that I will forget this book quickly and in a few years I won’t even remember I read it.

Fascinating and original.
