A really good book. I thought the parts he wrote about women were very interesting too. As a woman I can say that I thought his ideas were very valuable. But I've also heard complaints that the ideal man he writes about is a very culturally westernized perspectived and that non-western (Asian) guys feel picked on. I think that complaint is a valuable one to consider and may hold true.

I liked the book. It is not so much a "how to parent" book as a this is how I parent and this is how it turned out. Yes, she is intense but she admits it does not always work. And she does have some valid points. All in all good read but NOT an instruction manual.

A wonderful book unlike any of the traditional Grisham novels. My mother was raised a Southern farm girl. It was terrific to get a better understanding of the world in which she lived. I only own those books I want to read again. I own this one.

This was not one of my favorite books. I suppose this was a well written story due to the awards and positive critiques from the literary world. However...I found this to be a choppy story about a young Jewish boy who survives Nazis coming into the family apartment and killing the family, except for him (I believe that he was hiding). Upon the horror of finding his family dead, Jakob runs into the woods and buries himself in the ground to hide. He is found by Athos, a greek archeologist. Anthos takes Jakob to care for and raise him. Jakob has many daymares and nightmares due to the unrest that the Nazis have caused the country and his family. Athos is a patient man, and continues to care for him until he dies. By this time, Jakob is in his late teens. Jakob's story continues as in falls in and out of love.

After five months of hauling this behemoth around with me, I finally finished it. Dunno what to say exactly. It's the kind of writing you can get drunk on. Sometimes reading it was like wading through taffy. The word prolix would be apt (it appears twice in the text). It's engrossing and expansive. While reading it, I found myself writing like Mr. Wallace which is kind of cool but mostly nightmarish. For some reason, after finishing the book, I couldn't get the words moribund and alacrity out of my head. Then, coincidentally enough, both words appear in In Persuasion Nation which I am currently reading. With the possible exception of Mezzanine this book contains the most heinous use of footnotes EVER. I loved nearly every word of it. The person who finished reading this book is not the same one who started it. Is this a product of reading the book? *shoulder shrug* Beats me. All I know is that I've become a wholly different person since May with this book being, really, the only link between the two separate entities that are "myself". This review: incoherent rant? Possibly. Brilliant post-modern meta-critique? um... Maybe?
