Expected to really like this book, and just didn't. I couldn't even finish it. I was unimpressed by Taibo (of whose work I had been previously ignorant), and while a novel by four hands sounds good in theory, the execution for me wasn't there. A far cry from the revolutionary insight and wit of much of Marcos' other work.

This book was an amazing and tragic look into the meat packing industry in the early 20th century. I found it informative, revealing, and shocking. I can see why it caused quite a stir and why it provoked the changes it did. The biggest disappointment was the ending. The story was so heartbreaking, and all the ending offered was 20 pages or so of socialist propaganda, basically leaving the characters behind and making me feel like the whole story was just a front for this author's desire to convert the world to socialism. The book and the ending seemed to be two different works. The writing changed from subtle tellings of shocking to truth to outlandish claims by obviously obsessed people who randomly came into the main character's life. If it weren't for the lame ending, I would have given it five stars.

I absolutely loved Sandra Kring's "Book of Bright Ideas" so I thought I'd try this one out. Its a good one, but not my favorite. Very real, though. And the last chapter just paints a great picture of life after the war. So beautiful.
