** spoiler alert ** In this book, Rachel travels to San Francisco by car with Trent, Ivy, and Jenks. THe mishaps across country - The fall of the arch in St. Louis and Jenks getting kidnapped - add lots of humor and of course get Rachel in lots of trouble. Especially since she is on her way to a coven meeting to get her shunning rescinded. Once there, Trent and Jenks leave for Seattle for Trent's "elf quest" which turns into him stealing a baby! Even crazier, the baby turns out to be Trent's daughter. Who would have thought he had it in him!! The mayhem that follows is some of the worse crap Rachel has ever gotten herself into, but of course she survives (barely). I just hope she doesn't hide behind her silver bracelet for too long. It would make the next book very tame.

The plot was interesting, and kept my interest until the end. The foreshadowing was really subtle; I remember thinking early on: “Oh, something about that Mysterious Group is going to be what solves this Mysterious Happening that is central to the plot” and then completely forgetting about the Mysterious Group and being carried along by the story, until - ta-dah! - Mysterious Group pops up again, and lo, they do indeed partially explain the Mysterious Happening. I kept comparing it to other things (mostly LOTR and Stargate) but the comparisons weren’t in the vein of “look how this guy is ripping off episode 34!” but rather “it’s kind of like episode 34 where they do that thing, but not really.” Oh, so you want to know about the plot? Okay, here goes. Elantris is a magical city in the midst of a fairly normal world. The people who inhabit Elantris are super-human; they are smarter, stronger and faster than regular people and they look differently too, with white hair and glowing skin. But the Elantrians were originally regular people. They are transformed into Elantrians by an instantaneous process called the “Sheod” that strikes without warning, usually while the person is asleep. Elantris had been doing its magical-city-thing for a long while, then suddenly, the city stopped being magical. The Elantrians became crippled, pain-wracked beings who were a shadow of their former selves. And all the lands around fell into chaos. Ten years later, people are still being transformed, but it’s a terrible curse rather than a blessing. And when it happens to the beloved crown prince of the country of Arelon, then the story begins. The novel has a lot of fascinating plots. There’s the mystery (why did Elantris suddenly stop being so awesome?), and there’s political intrigue in the country of Arelon, some religious zealots who are trying to convert everybody, and a little bit of romance thrown in. But it’s not hard to keep straight, and it all ties up pretty neatly in the end, and not in that Deus Ex Machina so common in lesser stories. The one aspect about the book that I didn’t like was the languages. Sanderson came up with a lot of interesting names for places, people and magicks, but many of them are very similar sounding, and it’s easy to get confused, especially with the more minor characters. But this is really the only criticism that I can make. I can wholeheartedly recommend Elantris to you, especially if you like fantasy. Give it a try!

This used to be one of my favorite books in middle school/high school and was probably one of the reasons I really got into fantasy/scifi. Looking back on it, the writing isn't so great, and the later books are pretty bad/use the typical fantasy formula. All in all a good fun read, and of course there's a love story.

The story takes place in a future time after some kind of nuclear event where civilization as we know it no longer exists. I first read this as a teenager and really enjoyed it. I wanted to read it again to see if it was appropriate for my 10 year old. I was expecting it to be very outdated because technology has changed so much since then, but I was surprised. Besides the fact that VHS tape was the most advanced video technology that existed at the time... and for the characters in the story.... the rest really isn't dated. Gerald Lund's writing has some annoying qualities that didn't bother me as a teenager, but he has a great imagine and is an excellent storyteller.

Another great edition to the Rachel Morgan series. What I love about this series is the adventure and excitement, twists and unexpected turns. The characters have become very well developed and the relationships intricate and enjoyable. The series isn't smutty, I LOVE that! Looking forward to the next installment.

I really love Adrian Tomine's Optic Nerve series, and I think he's one of the best comic artists out there today. This book is a good one to glance at, but I don't think it's a worthy coffee table book - not enough substance.

this book is great when read in tandem with katherine harmon's book you are here: maps of the imagination. (i've bought five or more copies of that book as gifts; everyone should have a copy.) both are full of delightful, beautifully reproduced maps of fancy--created about imaginary places or places reimagined. a wonderful way of thinking about creating place in fiction, but also of the psychogeographical implications of the places we travel through in our imaginations and in our every day lives. the turchi book is replete with tasty quotes and was written by the head of the warren wilson low-res program.

I read this because I heard they were making a movie about it, looking to capitalize on the success of the Harry Potter franchise. Hence, I read it expecting it to compare to Harry Potter. It didn't. This really is for children, complete with definitions when the author uses large words. I am not saying it is a bad book for children, just that I didn't really like it, as I am not the intended audience.
