awesome book! made me appreciate my life.. and "analyze" what culture means to us and what role it plays in our lives...

Very witty book. The main character Vladimir is masterfully constructed. He's a Russian Jew emigrant in NY, and his cultural identities crises are treated in both a profound and a humorous manner. On the negative side, S. indulges a bit too much in ethnic/national stereotypes.

This is such a great novel. I read it a few years ago, I think it was in 2004, I don't really remember now, but I know it was before I separated from Fabio since during the separation process I only read books by Chris Bojalian and books that Lauren mailed me. She didn't mail me The Little Friend, but I'm sure it is she who recommended it. Just last night, I was talking with my friend Jenna about this book (which I convinced her to read, and which she is reading now) and we were cracking up over the part where Harriet gives her Sunday School teacher the drawing of the black spot. This is one of the most intriguing books in the history of writing. It should have won prizes, maybe it did. It's complicated but not overwhelming in its detail. It's clever without being overwrought. It's dark without making one want to be buried alive rather than finish a chapter. And it's Southern without being charming. Which is something to which I can relate.

I'm so excited about this story. It mirrors the movie I love so much until roughly chapter six. By the midpoint of the book, you are in an entirely different story. I feel like I got an additional time with Howl, Sophie and Calcifer. Joy!

I have a vague memory of there being creatures under his office building? It was a strange story but it didn't stick in my head.

This is another one of those simply gorgeous volumes which, thankfully, have been put back into print. All four stories are charming and dream-like (like the best of McKinley's work), but my particular favourite is the "The Golden Hind." McKinley's subtlety, her ability to sum up a slew of ambiguous and startling emotions is at its height here, when our heroine, Korah, dines with the brother of the Golden Hind, and he looks up at our heroine with shock that he loves her, and whispers, "I'm sorry." My only sorrow is that some of these short stories were not expanded into novels - they're so densely rich, they pull at the seams of their own narrative. For lovers of George MacDonald mixed with a little Lord Dunsany, make sure you read this book.

This book is a collection of chapters. The first chapters provide an overview of the theory, the later chapters go in depth into special topics and applications. I used this as a textbook. Some issues: It can be very dense, as it is covering a lot of ground. Some chapters cover material that take a whole textbook. My students complained that there were not enough examples. For homeworks and exams I made up problems (it helped that I have other books for source material, and a bit of imagination.) I found it useful and my students who actually worked in the industries covered in the application chapters found them to be both interesting and immediately useful (which is high praise for a technical text). It fails to get that fifth star because it is dense (and a few typos)

E.L. Doctorow is a genius. The book is brilliant, just brilliant. "About" the Rosenberg trial, in the way that Ragtime is "about" Houdini, or The March "about" Sherman. It's heavy reading, a bit more in the vein of City of God than Ragtime.

I love Emily Dickinson. What I love about her is that her poems are so full and thought out. Ever word contributes to the overall meaning. And she writes about so much more than what the average person thinks she does. I have read out of this book three different times in my education: sophomore year of high school, senior year of high school, and my Dickinson and Frost class in college.

Hmmm, bu kitap hakkında ne düşündüm. Ben zevk, ama hakkında .... okumak zor bir konudur kesin.
