I started reading this book in the hope that it was going to be something different from the tired formula that you get in allot of other fantasy books. I thought the first half was interesting and I didn't want to put it down, but then it disintegrated into pap and I just couldn't finish it (I really tried). I was quite disappointed. Every now and again you come across something really good but this wasn't it. My last good fantasy read was Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve and before that Rally Cry by William R Forstchen.

I don't read as much "hard SF" as, um, "soft SF" I guess, but this is defintely "hard SF", and it's definitely solid. Pretty much everything takes a back seat to tech in this novel, despite the fact that Bear has crafted an engaging heroine in Patricia Vasquez. It's been a while since I've read this, so I'll leave it at that for now.

One of the better P&P sequels I've read, probably because it was written back in 1949 before people became obsessed with "modernizing" Darcy and Elizabeth. The writing is clear and witty, and I felt that it remained true to the original characters. The main plot thread was a little odd to me, but I still felt that the book was a worthwhile read overall.

This was one of the books I ended up reading for my YA Lit course, and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I'd gone in expecting it to be a little too cheesy or dated for me to really like, but I definitely got sucked into it, and was shocked when I found out that S.E. Hinton was a) female and b) wrote this book as a young teenager. Definitely a classic.
