This book was very cool. It reminded me of Octavia Butler's Kindred - how the hero was ripped from time and place without warning. But it was contemporary - and not about Black people at all. Still a dam good read.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is an interesting read from the get go and is the story of 2 boys who were unlikely friends as kids and how one incident could change their lives and the lives of other around them. There are underlying mysteries which I was able to figure out before the reveal of the answers, but that in no way detracted from the enjoyment of the story. The story takes place in Mississippi (hence the title "Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter")and switches between when the boys were young (1980's) to present day. Larry Ott (Scarey Larry) is a bit of an outcast in the small town of Chabot Mississippi because he took a girl on a date when he was a junior in High School and she disappeared never to be heard from again. There was never any proof Larry did anything, no body and he denied harming the girl, yet everyone in town decided he was guilty and his life was not the same afterward. Silas (32) Jones is the constable and a childhood friend of Larry's. They had a falling out and went their separate ways after the incident. Silas became a baseball star and went away to school to eventually return to town as a member of the small law enforcement team. When the daughter of the wealthy saw mill owner disappears, everyone is sure it was Scarey Larry again. Events unfold that make Silas question the validity of Larry as a suspect.

I had no idea what this book was about when I started it. I felt like it was a little strange, but I did take things from it and felt that it had a good message.

Ok, my friend told me to read Neil Gaiman, but I think I shouldn't have started with this one. It was pretty dull for a majority of the story... the ending was good, I guess, but I had a hard time caring because I hadn't been the whole book. So whatever. I'm just glad to be done with it... is that bad?

I liked this book because it encouraged me to ask some good questions about my parenting. I don't totally agree with everything the author suggests, but I do think his basic premise of unconditional love is right on, and a good reminder to pay attention to how my children might perceive my good intentions!

Set in the 16th century Ottoman Empire. A young girl and her younger brother are seperated when he is kidnapped by Turkish slavers. Their lives go different directions until they meet again at the book's climax - the 1565 seige of Malta. I bought this in Malta, which may have skewed my view a little since it starts and ends in Malta. A great story line with a lot of honesty. The story doesn't capitalize on every cliche and hook, but rather progresses more like could probably be expected in its time.

This took me a long time to work my way through, but I liked it a lot. As always with Pres. Kimball he just lays it right out there, doesn't beat around the bush about what we're supposed to be doing. And it never ceases to amaze me how even though his (and other apostles) writings were decades ago, they seem so perfectly applicable today.
