Nathaniel Fick entered the Marines by way of Dartmouth College, not the standard route by any means. In “One Bullet Away” he has written a terrific book that should be required reading for all. It gave me a whole new perspective on the war in Iraq. The bravery with which our men serve is incredible. The content is gripping, and Fick’s writing style just adds to it. He paints a vivid picture of life on the front lines during the initial surge into Iraq after 9/11. Fick is obviously a very intelligent man, but he is also a man of immense bravery and compassion. ‘Compassionate’ wasn’t a word that came to mind when I thought of the typical Marine, but I came away from “One Bullet Away” realizing that many Marines are just that. Fick opens up and shares his inner thoughts and fears, which is what makes it such a compelling read.

I have a hard time even starting to write a review of this book. A very powerful story about living outside the binary gender paradigm (or more to the point living despite it).

This is the last Binchy book I will ever buy. She has a new one out now, and I won't go there. Her earlier works, until Tara Road, which was the "beginning of the end," in my opinion, are among my favorite re-readable books. She's one of those authors who should have stuck to writing what she knows (post-WWII life in small Irish villages) rather than trying to be hip (yuppies, cappuchino machines, groups of middle-aged tourists, etc.) Her newer books, in the opinion of one of my friends, seem ghost-written. Will the real Binchy ever be back?

** spoiler alert ** Oh, goodness. I'm going to feel really badly about this if I'm wrong, but I get the feeling that this was meant to be a satire of the mystery-romance type genre. Why do I feel this way? Perhaps it has to do with the seven gents presented as love-interests for our main character. Or with the fact that one ends up dating her sister and another ends up dating her mother. Or maybe it with the three-to-one date with the band guys, each of whom was in the early twenties ("We've been reading Cosmopolitan.") And the part where she holds up the bad guy with a glue gun? Definitely a contributing factor. ("You should've shot him." "I couldn't. It wasn't plugged in.") Also, at the police station: Bad Cop: Don't mess with me! Isabel Stanley: I'm not! You don't have to scare my into spilling my guts. I'll spill them without the act. Good Cop: What act? I.S.: Good cop, bad cop.... Don't feel bad. You do it very well. It's just that I was expecting it. I can pretend I don't notice if you want. So, apologies to author and fans if I'm wrong, but I definitely think that this is a mystery-romance satire. And I think it's a very good satire. I laughed. Out loud. It's possible I was a little punch-drunk, since it was three in the morning, but I still laughed. Out loud.

I trully enjoyed Chiquita's story. Well written and full of those historic tidbits that make the story dynamic.

A fantastic adaptation for radio of Toby Hadoke's one-man comedy show "Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf". Both funny and touching. Required listening for Doctor Who fans, or anyone who wants to understand why Doctor Who fans are so passionate about the show.

I have heard way too much amazing stuff about this book to not read it. Okay, okay already. Definitely intrigued by how Jews dominated the field of comic book writing for the last 60-plus years.

Enter the dark and very strange world of Emily, who is always bored. Emily looks for ways to kill the boredom by conducting strange experiments on headless kangaroos, adding strange sauce to school cafeteria meatloaf, and hanging out in the cemetery. If you have ever been so bored that you could scream and your humor tends towards the dark side, this graphic novel is for you.

One word...Meh. I really enjoyed her book Can You Keep a Secret?, but this one did nothing for me. The concept was intriguing, but the book didn't deliver. Not much else to say about it.
