Very much enjoying this. Rather bizarre. Fabula. Delightfully absurd and funny.

This book must have been a particularly good one, because even though I read through it years ago it really has resonated with me and I will always put it up there amongst my favourite thrillers. I can remember it being really tightly written, with some fantastic characters and plot twists. Mars is a brilliant character, very colourful and stands out vividly to me; Jeff is a pretty good anti-hero with a troubled past. I couldn't stop reading it, it became impulsive - and the ending is a good one as well. One tip - the film of this book is atrocious and doesn't even begin to mirror the tightness of the plot. Don't bother watching it (unless you've read the book already and want to see the perfect example of how badly books can be interpreted onto film).

I can't say I loved this book, although I wanted to. I love Maria Snyder's Study series and I love dystopian science fiction. To me this seemed like a match made in heaven. It was good. Just not great. I really liked the main character. Trella as likeable and her reactions to things were realistic. She wasn't a giddy little girl who swooned at the slightest thing like so many YA heroines these days. And I liked Cog and Riley quite a bit too. The chemistry between Trella and the two men was nice. And I loved that it wasn't a love triangle in any way. Just a good, lifelong friend and new friend who may have potential for more. That was definitely more like real life, despite the dystopian setting. And there was a couple of twists that I enjoyed - both where Outside really was and the cliffhanger ending. I didn't expect either. So while this wasn't my favorite book by Snyder, it was definitely worth 3.5 stars. And I plan on reading Outside In as soon as I can.

A lovely 19th century melodrama (panorama) that cynically observes the plights of womanhood to be equally born of social restrictions and women's passive acceptance of their own degradation and unhappiness.

was a good listen, really like parts of it, but not the resolution , but liked the ending, not sure how much to say as not to spoil it!!!!
Offered such promise but was unfortunatley a let down. I read this book and expected to come away with a better understaning of voice-hearing but instead received a short history lesson on past voice-hearers such as Joan of Arc. While I appreciate the author's attempt to pull direct experiences into the book he fell short of pulling everything together into a cohesive message. The organization of the book was also frustrating. The chapters did not flow and I found it difficult to finish (it took me almost a month to finally plod through it). Yet - maybe that was the point Smith was trying to make. Voice-hearing still isn't well understood and people who experience it are often schizophrenic. If he was trying to mimic schizophrenia then job well done.

To call this series a detective story is like calling the Bible inspirational literature.

I know, it's sacreliege, but I didn't really like The Help. I found it simplistic, rather unbelievable, rather brainless — just not a lot of there there. Some very compelling issues, but I just didn't like the way they were addressed. I'd rather put more thought into it.
