At this writing, the USA has been worked up into a lather for a year, from the lead-up to the national elections of 2008 and continuing in the first days of the Obama Administration, over an alleged slide into "socialism." Usually, the word is used as a simple epithet or bugaboo, with little or no reference to any meaningful definition of socialism. So what is socialism? As the United States was gearing up to elect Barack Obama as its 44th President, I found this edition in one of my favorite used book shops, a fat collection of essays starting with "founding fathers" such as Marx and Engels, and moving on to an eclectic and international array of writers writing from or about socialist perspectives from the days of Marx through the 1970's. It offers the perspective of bureaucratic collectivism and democratic socialism, demonstrating through literature the different approaches within the spectrum of socialist thought, even if the contributions are more on the theoretical side than on details of policy. Was the choice of red for the cover intentional?

Borrowed from someone at work, who insisted that I had to read it, being a quaker from indiana and all. ashamed a bit, b/c I think it is on either kelly ripa or oprahs' (the Seccccccccccccccccccccccccccret) book of the month club, but it is cute

The basic premise (middle-aged rubber stamp manufacture becomes possessed by Robber King past life) is hysterical. In practice, though, it is often incoherently violent and I had to take a whole star off for a strange subterranean utopian exploit that was so strangely out of line of the characters. I had such high hopes, because I love Leroux generally speaking.

This was a quick read - I enjoyed the storyline and the characters were very likeable. I did find some parts hard to believe, a little too coincidental, and predictable. That being said it was charming. Liked the recipes at the back of the book as well. I am looking forward to reading the following up!

Definitely a good read, with well-drawn characters and an interesting-enough mystery to keep the people who are in it for the "genre" aspects interested. It's hard, very hard to keep a reader interested during long passages where the point-of-view character is alone and not interacting with anyone, and I have to admit that my interest slipped a bit during some of them, but Griffith is a good enough writer to make it work most of the time. Also: it's nice to see a story with a believable, well-rounded romance without having to foreground that romance and make the entire story about it.

This is the story of an amazing woman who was the courage to stand and speak up for herself and her girls. Reading this I couldn't believe that people are able to do this to other human beings. The incredible sadness of this makes me think about human trafficking and what I can do in my life to help prevent it. Because it's worldwide. The girls that are working in the red light district in Amsterdam, are not from Cambodia, but from Eastern Europe and have no voice at all. Their voice must be heard. Somaly Mam's courage moves my heart.

Pamuk does it again. The perspectives of the city as a self-portrait are profound. It shares the melancholy of all Istanbullus, the sadness that comes of living in ruins of once great city. Pamuk is an architect by profession and hence his perspectives are articulate to the point in presenting a picture in front of your eyes while reading. At a times the writing becomes little dramatic, however overall good read!

Interesting book, but a bit pessimistic. I'd like to think that we will begin to grow beyond wars and endless conflict and political maneuvering in the next 100 years. It is a study of what could be, but I don't know how accurate it can be... then again, I'm not an expert in geo-politics. Friedman's historical info is quite interesting and comes to interesting (and logical) conclusions... I just don't know if they can happen. But then again, where were we in 1911?!? Could those alive then believe how far we've advanced in the last 100 years? A recommended read only if you like world affairs (with a touch of science-fiction).
