This is a very patchy writer and this book is one of the weaker ones in the series. It's really a collection of short stories masquerading as a novel. I am not convinced Baker is able to rise above the novella level as all her full sized books seem to run out of steam way before the end.

It's been a while since I've read a Wharton novel, but this made me want to make a stack of all the others I haven't read (along with those I have) and stay put for the summer, polishing them off one by one. When I read "The Emperor's Children" in summer '05, I immediately felt that Messud had to have studied (and loved) Wharton's manner of observing the worlds of New York society. "The Custom of the Country" is a biting, brilliant book of the social aspirations of one Undine Spragg of Apex, NY. Paris Hilton would be smart to get the cliff notes for this one. As I read the novel, I was continually surprised by how contemporary it felt. Not only by the writing, but also at how things really have not changed. There will always be people with their sights on the next best thing and the best way to go about attaining it. A fascinating commentary on the United States at that point in its history (Undine Spragg = US) and an all-out scathing read.

This actually came out years before the movie. It is atrocious.

I have not penetrated much of this text - a few dozen pages. I had heard it was one of the most impenetrable English - okay, borderline English - books ever written, and I thought I'd take a crack at it. I'd read Portrait of the Artist in grad school, and that experience helped me when I finally got around to reading Ulysses. I was deeply flummoxed by WAKE until I got the bright idea to read it aloud. Didn't help. So I tried reading with a (terrible) Irish accent. Helped some. Since I don't drink, I couldn't explore the next step - reading aloud in a drunken Irish accent. I'm still hoping to find an audiobook or dramatization featuring drunken Irish orators, or a particularly bold pub-cam on Ustream. I suspect the keymaster to this puppy wields a Guinness Harp. (Updated: Audible doesn't have it, but the preview here, read by Jim Norton, shows promise. slow and musical, a performance more than a reading. http://www.naxosaudiobooks.com/596012...)

I liked the story, and the idea behind it, but it had too much of a "Lifetime-made-for-tv-movie" feel and an overly dramatic ending that took away from what i thought was an interesting ethical dilemma. But the characters were good and the story progression made it a very entertaining read.

I am not liking this book at all. I don't even know if I'm going to be able to finish it. So far, every time I sit down to try to read, I end up merely skimming. The writing is awful, as are the characters. I'm no longer reading the book so much as I am reading my money--unless it gets much better towards the middle, I don't recommend it to anyone.

Who would have thought my sister and cousins under 12 would know what penultimate meant?
