Definitely one of the best books I've ever read. The writing blew me away (I listened to the first few chapters on CD and, especially at that pace, you notice the imagery and the pace. I also love how the narrator is looking back, and how well he tells the story! I read Lord of the Rings and this is sorta of like that (as in they're both Epic Fantasy) but this was so much more approachable, and to me, more enjoyable. I can't wait to read the next two!!

A brilliant, sparely written, quiet book. It reads like a haunting dream. Very dark and surreal. 5 stars if it wasn't for the ending, which is a little shaky.

If I worked hard academically and went to college why do I hate my job? Why am I not rich yet? Why can I not even fathom buying a house or having enough money to raise some brats? Twenge is funny, sensitive, and harshly realistic as she explains how the rise of the self-esteem movement started in elementary schools in the 80's (and beyond) has created a generation of adults who feel entitled to so much more than they actually get. And how confused and frustrated we feel because life really is so much more expensive and good paying job really are so much harder to get than it was for our parents... Learning more about the pretty depressing psychology and economics of my generation actually made me feel better.

I go between "it was ok" to "liked it". It took me until page 80 to really get into it. Sometimes the story would become too predictable and cliché for me. Reminds me of a NY version of Steel Magnolias.

4.5 stars - An exciting start to what appears to be an incredibly engaging series.

I started reading this because somewhere on the inturwebz I read someone referencing it as the basis for Youth In Revolt, one of my favorite books. And that Youth In Revolt stole it's character, narrative tone, and pretty much the substance of the book. Not much. Youth In Revolt definitely owes a debt of gratitude to Adrian Mole, but that is all. It stands on it's own feet, and has it's own merits. Adrian Mole is much more subdued. Youth In Revolt has an absurdity to it that Mole does not. I definitely rate YIR higher than Adrian Mole, that having been said, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and finished it and the first sequel in a matter of a couple afternoons. Sorry this review was mostly about Youth In Revolt and not really about The Secret Diaries Of Adrian Mole.

Norman Mailer’s take on the Viet Nam War is as funny as it is it sad and grotesque. Mailer put down on paper what many of us felt about the Viet Nam, but were not articulate enough to express.

Fascinating, though he references his other books a little too much for my own taste, since I'd already read one of them. But wonderful book.
