_attikaybee
Katti Ka _attikaybee — I finished this book within a day and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I had never thought about picking up another one of Meg Cabot's books despite the fact that I loved the Airhead series, but I can confidently say that I am eager to read some of her other books. I would definitely recommend Jinx to others because it has relatable characters with paranormal elements thrown into the mixture.

_llis_are
Ellis Ware _llis_are — This is an understated novel which fits well with the calm rendering of Native American life it offers. The plot follows the daily domestic life of Morning Girl and her family, characters who are quiet, thoughtful and peaceful in their comings and goings. What is revealed is a view of Native Americans as a people unattached to material things, respectful of the earth and its natural elements, and as deeply spiritual. I think that the true testament to the novel as understatement is that Columbus and his men arrive in the very last scene of the novel, so that the bulk of the story is really about the calm before the storm. We know from history what comes later, but these tragedies are only hinted at in Dorris' work. For example, Columbus writes in his first journal entry after meeting Morning Girl's family and their tribe: These people "should be good and intelligent servants and ... I believe that they would become Christians very easily, for it seems ... that they have no religion" (Dorris, 74). As historical fiction, then, this short novel works well; it presents history at an angle many of us will not have looked through before now. My favorite part of the novel was the depiction of Morning Girl's relationship with her brother, Star Boy. Each child craves the parents' attention and neither can hide their jealousy when their sibling seems to "win." I can connect to this since I have two small children who often fight for a spot on my lap and get upset when they have to share me; it's fairly standard sibling rivalry, but still no trivial thing. The mother in the novel leaves home at one point to give birth to an expected third child but returns home alone after a still birth. The mother is hugging her daughter upon her return when Morning Girl notices Star Boy sort of sulking in the background, clearly longing for his mama. "Look, Mother," says Morning Girl. "Star Boy's here. He has been waiting for you to come home." When Star Boy runs to his mother's embrace and receives her kisses, Morning Girl can see that her "brother's shoulders lost their hunch" and she herself feels a tightness being released from her stomach. That was how it should be, she concedes, and for a moment she doesn't wish it was her in their mother's arms.

orlandocreativ
Orlando Creativ orlandocreativ — I started reading this because somewhere on the inturwebz I read someone referencing it as the basis for Youth In Revolt, one of my favorite books. And that Youth In Revolt stole it's character, narrative tone, and pretty much the substance of the book. Not much. Youth In Revolt definitely owes a debt of gratitude to Adrian Mole, but that is all. It stands on it's own feet, and has it's own merits. Adrian Mole is much more subdued. Youth In Revolt has an absurdity to it that Mole does not. I definitely rate YIR higher than Adrian Mole, that having been said, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and finished it and the first sequel in a matter of a couple afternoons. Sorry this review was mostly about Youth In Revolt and not really about The Secret Diaries Of Adrian Mole.
