This book is incredibly readable, and that’s saying a lot given that it’s essentially a compilation of applied economics research. The authors should be applauded for taking a field of study that is perceived to be largely theoretical and presenting it in a practical (to Stephen Levitt’s credit) and understandable (to Stephen Dubner’s credit) way. The topics tackled are a far cry from monetary and fiscal policy (about which Mr Levitt readily pleads ignorance). Instead, Mr Levitt and Mr Dubner take the tools of economics to other fields (most notably sociology, political science, and psychology) and answer their questions. Because the book’s topics range from rigged sumo wrestling in Japan to the downfall of the Ku Klux Klan to stereotyping on The Weakest Link to crack dealer profitability, the composite work appears to have no cohesive point (to which, again, Mr Levitt readily admits in the epilogue; he even argues against the need for such a theme in those pages). But then again, maybe that is the point – the ability of economics to touch facets of everyday life. In his own words: “The only things I’m good at, really and honestly, are asking questions that people seem to find interesting, and figuring out how to trick data into answering those questions.” Taken as an introductory book to the world of applied economics, this work has few flaws. To find their broad audience, however, the authors make some unfortunate sacrifices that ought not to be overlooked. Most apparent is the preference for macro-level, qualitative explanations over the use of supporting data. While the endnotes provide the means for additional study, a reader with any sort of quantitative background may find their writing style to be somewhat patronizing. And then there are times when data are included with no obvious point other than the reader’s amusement, most notably the barrage of name lists in chapter six, which are interesting but clearly more suitable as an appendix. Finally, there is a difference in complexity between a research study with a binary outcome (e.g. whether or not cheating occurred in Chicago public school standardized testing) and one that seeks to identify the cause(s) of a given effect (e.g. the steady drop in crime during the 1990s). The latter has multiple variables in play, and more time would have ideally been spent on explaining how to isolate these variables, and on how Mr Levitt concluded that each factor was responsible for a specific percentage of said effect.
