Solutio42 Solutio42 solutio42 — I thought this was a great book. It had quite a lot of scope, covered some fairly deep issues and had enough imagination to keep me turning pages. It was easy-to-read, very quick, and as one or two people have pointed out, would make a good beach read. Fans of dystopian novels should give it a try - it won't take too much time from busy schedules. I wouldn't put it on the same standing as Orwell, but it's an entertaining read that shouldn't be dismissed lightly.

Omar Omar _mar_hms — Longwinded and preoccupied with history. In other short stories and books Proulx proved herself a master at casting a compelling story before a meaningful historical backdrop. To me, when history takes precedence over story the writing suffers. That's what happens here. Proulx doesn't seem to care about her characters so much as the ambitious task she has set before her, which is to follow the peripatetic path of a simple green organetto for a hundred years. Some of her plot twists are interesting. Some of her intersections with history are cool. Sometimes she's showing off. Everything is skullfully written, though, and, of course, we see the button accordion to the end of its life and a good deal of America along the way. Worth a read if you're in for a long, meandering story with hints of magic realism. Otherwise, read Close Range: wyo stories by Proulx and you'll see a powerful writer at work.

Neil Hartmann neilhartmann — I have read other Conroy books (Prince of Tides and South of Broad) and loved them. The Great Santini is nothing like those books. This one is about a family in the military with an abusive father. I can't think of anything to recommend it and am struggling to finish it.
