I love how Dennis Lehane uses the same characters in such different situations with different moods. In my review of Sacred, I mentioned how the dialogue is light and shows the characters' comical sides. This book is the exact polar opposite. In classic Lehane style, the readers is taken through twists and turns and nothing is as it appears. But this one goes beyond the "thriller" aspect and presents a moral dilemma for Kenzie and Gennaro. The ending really makes you think. Thank goodness, that Moonlight Mile is a somewhat sequel, because I'm totally intrigued by this story.

I would have given this book five stars, if I wasn't seriously let down by the ending. I found one chapter in particular very poetic. The things they carried, "they carried..." line after line of what American soldiers endured during the Vietnam struggle was very well written, as was the entire book. it wasn't as blantely anti-war as others in its genre but still sent a solid message of the consequences of war and what it does to the children who are forced to fight wars for the old. Bueno, I think Vonnegut would have approved.

** spoiler alert ** I read this one on the bus during our middle school trip to Washington, DC last week and immediately handed it off to one of my 7th graders on the trip. Me and Jack is a wonderful story. It has humor, adventure, bullies, history, a lovable rare dog, true friendship... so much packed artfully into this middle grade novel. (Slight spoiler alert!) I have to admit, I was a bit nervous that it was going to be another one of those books where you're rooting for the dog and it dies. I was so relieved that Jack doesn't die. I think that is one of the biggest complaints of my dog lovers- books too frequently end with the death of the dog that you've come to love. This is a book that I will be recommending to many students. Advance Reader Copy courtesy of the author.

the latest edition, while more accurate, lacks some of the curmudgeonly editorializing that earlier editions had

This book is a little more romancy than what I usually read, but the history kept me interested. Gregory weaves a good tale, and throwing in the real events makes it a little more meaningful...and of course it helped to feed the anglophile in me. They made a movie set to release this summer with Scarlett Johanssen and Natalie Portman. I will be interested to see how it compares.

Eh. Again, it was ok. I wanted closure, and I got it. But not a favorite series of mine.

Post-apocalypse (again, one of my favorite genres of fiction: man vs. nature, man removed from society, man as animal) story of a father and his son. I read this book in 4 hours. It is exceptional. At moments horrifying, frightening, incredibly sad, and overall, a remarkable homage to humanity's desperate search for goodness and meaning.

Oh, my beloved Janet. I have never been more eager to return a book to the library. Not because I want to share the joy of reading with the next participant, but mainly because I can rid myself of the bedside-book guilt of not enjoying your literary attempt. Now, mind you, I understand you are a private person. And shy, to boot. But, I was under the impression that when I picked up a book about your life, that I would actually read about YOUR life. I pity the fool who believes this. I've learned more about your "friends" and their personal struggles than I have yours. Now, I can relate to your fluctuating weight and the determination to be healthy but happy; those struggles mirror my own. But, if I can be blunt, I realized that about you over the years. Your weight has been all over the board and I know, first hand, the emotional strain that comes with that reality. But all this book did was highlight it. Miss Jackson, (and I don't mean that in a nasty way), perhaps you weren't ready to tell your story. At least not most of it -- some for legal reasons, some because it's against your nature. I get that. But, I gotta say, this book, similar to your role in "For Colored Girls" was necessary, yet not notable. I am glad you are working through the issues that developed between you and Michael early in your siblinghood. And I am glad you are redefining your sense of self as a woman within relationships. I just hope in your next book, which I will undoubtedly read, (solely because I'm a fan! dammit!), perhaps you can redirect your focus. This book seems as if it's written for a younger audience. Other times, it seems as if you're talking to your older fans, in the same simplistic child-like tones. What you wrote was a whisper towards the truth. And even that takes bravery. If that is all we should expect from you, I will correct myself. But, I WILL warn others, that just because you subtitled the book, "A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself" does not mean that Janet will take you anywhere beyond the corner CVS to pick up a copy of Essence. Janet, I still remain a fan....of your music!
