I had to read this for a humanities class. I didn't like it. Very outdaed and I don't understand why Skinner wrote it like the Walden utopia had to succeed. I don't think it had to succeed.

This is the first of Anne Perry's annual Christmas novellas. The stories all feature a minor character from her other series and I always enjoy seeing a bit of their back stories. I have read several of these over the past several years but decided to start over at the beginning. This story is not the best of the series but was still enjoyable. On a side note, I feel sorry for all the people leaving bad reviews because they were expecting a cheery Christmas story and instead ended up reading a somber tale of death and judgmental Victorian high society.

I am sorry that I now have to wait for who knows how long before Martin finishes the series. I believe he's planning on 7 books, and with this being the 5th, there were some definite plot gaps that I am sure will be filled in the future publications - very much looking forward to seeing more of this series on HBO and reading the next books this author produces. Amazing!

Loved the premise of this book, but it was quite boring at times. In short, Roget was melancholic, emotionally closed off (albeit due to a chaotic childhood and mentally ill mother), and prone to bury himself in his work as an escape from life. I was interested to learn that Roget was trained as a physician. Unlike modern physicians/doctors of today, a physician back then treated internal diseases and were the most educated and respected of the medical profession. In Roget's time, physicians comprised only 10% of all doctors. He is also discovered the concept that the retina typically sees a series of still images as a continuous picture. This was an insight that would eventually lead to the creation of movies, and was discovered by Roget when he noticed a carriage riding by his basement-level office through the blinds on the window. Roget had some interesting personality quirks, but there was nothing as earth-shattering or as dramatic as The Professor and the Madman. I'm glad I read it, though, just to learn more about the Thesaurus and its roots. Other random factoids: - In Roget's time, students paid their professors directly when they attended their lectures. The going rate was about 3 guineas a class, which is worth slightly more than a pound. - London was the first city in the world to reach over 1 million residents in 1811.

I've got to say, Patricia Briggs is one of my all time favorite authors. Every book has kept my interest, the timing is good, the plot is great, and I blow through the pages like a devouring beast! I would recommend all her books to anyone who enjoys reading about the paranormal.
