a surreal, angry, lurid work. It transcends "fact-based" memoirs and the fact that the writer is mysterious is immaterial. Haunting and practically pornographic with descriptions of human depravity, sadism and suffering I'll never forget. I am eager to read his account of the psychiatric treatment he received for Concentration Camp Syndrome with the use of LSD.

Much better than Decent of Angels, the story was well put together and the various characters were shown to have believable flaws as opposed to randomly making treasonous decisions out of nowhere. The main two characters were done very well, as in the last book, but what was done even better was the fact that both had their personalities fleshed out. The perspective also shifted between the two, allowing the reader to see the parallels between them and their differences better. I loved the contrast between the two, and look forward to the next book dealing with them. The ending was also very enjoyable, and did a great job setting up the next story of the conflict.

Loved, loved, loved this book! One of my favorites of all time. I Martel knows how to tell a story and in the end, you learn a lot about yourself on how you respond to it.

A big zero. zip. nada. no stars...I rarely toss a book but this went into the recycling bin as soon as I was done. Couldn't burden anyone else with it. ironically, A Prayer for Owen Meany is one of my absolute favorites. Sadly, I cannot undue to one star rating, it is a typo and far too generous! http://www.goodreads.com/images/layou...

This was an amazing book! It totally capitvated me and made me feel like I was in Egypt. I now understand that part of history so much better. Cleopatra and Marcus Antony are so much more real now. There are some very detailed love parts that I skipped but yet even that seemed part of the world back then.

Not as funny as I've come to expect in this series, but a good read.

This one was okay. The cover art is ridiculous. The chick in this story, Ray Vereker, wouldn't be caught dead in high heels. Boots only. So... this was another of those stories where a bunch of the parents are gone, dead, because they've been killed off by the author in a convenient car accident. I thought I had started a rant about deadly car accidents on this review, but I guess it didn't get saved. Anyway. This is an okay read.

I love all things Augusten Burroughs. He is wickedly funny, as well as heart-wrenching. His writing is very addicting, I read all of his books in a row because I could not put them down.

It's been quite a few weeks, running into months, since I picked up Jennifer Kloester's well-researched book on the world of Georgette Heyer's Regency romances. It's a purely factual book that details places, customs, culture, dress code, the shopping and travelling experiences, hobbies available to men and women, upper-society's social etiquette, tourist spots and prominent people of the day. Most of what I read I was very much aware of through reading lots of books and watching lots of movies based in this era. But it was nice to have my suspicions or guesses confirmed. At other times it was interesting to know certain other little facts, for instance, the difference between a tiger and a groom, the description and purpose of a 'yard of tin', the intricate details of the clothes Regency men and women wore and the like. I would not recommend this book as an authority on all classes prevalent in England at the time. As the author declares, this book is just meant to make clear to us what would be quite incomprehensible in our time. Therefore, much of what is dealt with in here has to do with the upper-classes or the ton of England's society in the early 1800s. In other words, this is a pretty good guide to aristocratic Regency England.
